To be clear this was first noticed mining bitcoins, this is what afterburner looked like:

I thought might be something wrong with the miner or something, so then I tested on valley, and lo and behold:

Same problem

There is a also a rattling sound that the card makes. If I press 'downwards' on the top of the pcb, it seems to go away, life my hand, and it comes back when the fan is over the 'idle' speed. I can get a recording of this if it is necessary.

So, to conclude, a new feature I haven't read about possibly (:P), or a problem with my card?

Doesn't seem quite right, especially when benching you would expect it to stay at 100%.

Might be worth dropping a post in the customer services section.

Will do

Isn't this a known Bug in AB? Maybe try running GPU-z and see if that also reports same thing?

I run a sidebar 'tool' or whatever called GPU Monitor. I set the graph to only show gpu usage %. (during valley) Also forgot to say, but there were frequent frame drops from 5/60/70 to around 20/30 every 2 or so seconds

This is normal on other AMD boost cards, the gpu usage shows constant drops as the clock speed is always changing.

Hmm, you would think, but then I am pretty sure when getting off of valley or firestrike before, the gpu use graph would show a few percentage difference every now and then, not a constant 0-100%. Especially when temps are nowhere near the 95 limit, and the fan speed isn't all that high.

UPDATE: Seems like it has corrected itself (as these things do just after you post :L) Anyway, mined again, didn't have any of the constant drops as before. Ran valley, and it seemed to stay within near 100% usage. However the rattling is irritating, and I don't know that if I run the card for a while, it may exhibit behavior like before. I don't know if a 'rattle' and wildly variable clock speeds are enough to contact customer services with?

Close that GPU Monitor widget you have on your desktop, I remember having the same issue with my 5850 running that tool, just use afterburner.

Hi, I have a gigabyte windforce r9 290. I've just installed metro last night and i'm getting this jumpy GPU usage issue.. exactly the same as op, it constantly jumps from 0% to 100% and the game is basically unplayable. Is there any solution to this yet?

BF4 is ok it stays at 100% usage and plays on ultra fine.

Cheers

Unwinder said that it's down the AMD Drivers with these new cards.

This.

If its affecting performance just shut afterburner down and it should fix it.
