R9 290X keep getting black screens

Hi everyone.

I have a PC with an i7-4790K and Asus Maximus VII, MSI Gaming R9 290X, 8GB G.Skill memory drawing power through an XFX 850 Black Edition.

The system was running fine until two weeks ago when all of a sudden I got a black screen while browsing using Chrome. I did a restart of the PC and couldn't get any image on either HDTV (hdmi) or my ASUS VG278HE (DVI dual) as the ASUS kept saying no signal. Upon further investigation I found out that if both connections were connected I would get a black screen. If 1 was connected and the 2nd was connected again black screen.

I tried different version of Catalyst, since I always kept up to date but matters only got worse. The latest drivers wouldn't even allow me to boot with only 1 monitor connected.

I decided that perhaps it was drivers and windows 8, so i formatted my computer installed W7 Ultimate 64bit. This allowed me to use 1 monitor for about a week, when all of a sudden black screen again.

If i boot in safe mode, or run the GPU with no catalyst drivers on I have no black screen it can work for hours. As soon as I install ANY catalyst driver going back to 13.12 I either get a black screen as soon as I load into windows or shortly after.

I've tested it on another PC and still get the same problem so its definitely a card related issue. I have done all the tests I can without taking off the shroud and voiding my warranty so I am now seeking your assistance.

Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on? Is it time to RMA it? Trying to get an RMA Webnote on OCUK but after submitting my webnote it loads into a black screen so I'm note sure if my webnote has gone through.

Hi
If your able to rma then go for it, because that does look like its the gpu, and if i was you i would call them because there customer service is legit, quick and easy.

Download and install GPU-Z and see what memory brand it has. i.e. Elpeda, Hynix or Samsung.

Ok, does anything in particular cause the black screen? Like playing a particular game or running a certain program? Or is it just completely random?

Haven't been able to run games on the card this past week. I am now on my old GTX 580.

It started off as black screen when I had 2 monitors connected, 1 HDMI 1 DVI.
It then transitioned to black screen when I opened browsers with hardware acceleration enabled, which I disabled at one point. This was with only 1 monitor on.
Finally it just black screened as soon as it loaded in windows when the Catalyst drivers were installed. If it was just identified as generic VGA or safe mode I had no crashes.

Cool thanks for the feedback. I've been losing my mind tbh haha :)

Dunno if you can +rep on the forums but if you cant, here is a +rep xD

Quck question for you guys.

I got my RMA number and now inwill be shippingnthe card to OcUK. My question is howdo i ship the card? Do i only shipmthe gpu or its entire retail box with the accessories included. Im aking because the msg i got from ocuk isnt specific however i read that msi only wants the gpu on other forums.

No idea but would probably be better protected in its original box if you have it, could ask in customer support?

I have the original box in great condition. Was planning to ask on cs forum but there are no other posts so i wasnt sure if i shouldnt post or if i cant see them.

as it's faulty, ocuk should send you a pre-pay returns label, they get i think UP's or DPD to pick it up.... just send the card in the original box

Really? Did ocuk send you a pre-pay returns label gareth? What they usually do is get you to send item back and then if faulty they will refund the postage cost. At least thats what they did with me...thought thats the norm?

Also MSI dont take 28 days.... 28 days is just the statutory maximum you have to wait till you get your card back. If you dont get it back within that time then you are entitled to a refund / partial refund (from whichever retailer you bought it from).
