R9 290X Owners Thread

I can't say I'm impressed so far, there's no quiet/uber mode (tried both bios positions via swtich) and performances on benchmarks (3DMark, Unigine Heaven and Unigine Valley) are below the results I was getting with my R290 PCS.

Am I missing something? very tempted to send back the card for a refund at the moment...

Do not use AMD overdrive. EVER. Reset drivers back to default settings (This disabled overdrive) And use Trixx with 13.12 drivers or GPU Tweak with post mantle drivers. And make fan profiles of your own in these apps.
 
I'm not using AMD overdrive, no worries, and I use MSI Afterburner with 14.3 drivers but only to have a custom fan profile, have not touched anything else. Exact same setup as for when I was running my 290 PCS+

In doubt I've even tried without MSI Afterburner, same results :(

Ah I see sorry.

Temps are around 72°C on load with custom fan profile or 62-63°C with the default fan profile.

I haven't done any overclocking and not planning to do so to be honest so clocks are 1050/1350. No throttling experienced and no graphical artifacts, the card seems to be running fine, just that its performances are very disappointing compared to my 290 PCS (which was not overclocked, ran at factory default 1040/1350Mhz).

Just to give you an idea, I have a 3570K @ 4.2Ghz with 16GB @ 2133Mhz and my benchmark results are:

- Firestrike ~8600pts
- Firestrike Extreme ~4500pts
- Unigine Heaven Extreme Preset ~1700pts

As I said I was doing slightly better scores of all the above when running the 290 PCS+ so I'm really puzzled :confused:

First thing I've checked, and the R290X does report 64 ROPs /176 TMUs for a total of 2816 shaders.

The R290 in comparison reported 64 ROPs / 160 TMUs for a total of 2560 shaders.

So do you confirm that my scores with the 290X PCS+ are way too low?

I think they're low, wont say for sure though. I can do a stock run later on my card but im really REALLY lazy. Im sure Kaap will if you ask nicely :D
 
Really? I thought that was a normal score for a Core i5 3570K moderatly overclocked.

As for the graphics score it still puzzled me as of why it is lower than when using my 290 PCS+...
 
Your comparison is funny stulid, our CPUs are definitely not playing in the same category :D

As for the R290X PCS+ I'm really clueless, spent my evening trying different things and still can't get better performance than my R290 PCS+. I can't be bothered, will be returning the card for a refund... :(
 
Looking at getting a couple of these but worried about how close they will sit together in crossfire config, I will be using a P8Z77 broad for now till the X99's release. They appear to use 2.5 slots each, could I get away with it or will it kill the temps?
