R9 290X Owners Thread

Must admit that is what has me rubbing my hands together with this card, and why in the end I chose it over buying a Classified to play with. The thought of Sammy IC 1700mhz+ on 512bit bus makes me giggle like a Japanese school girl. Hopefully the enormous stock cooler will give me some leeway before the EK block gets here. Much like if I had chosen the Classified I fully expect to be able to beat my reference Ti scores, most likely even on air.

I'm sure it could go higher but after having one die I'm being cautious. I've put it back to stock for now as it was whining at those settings :(.

I may try again at the weekend but for now I'm going to play some games.

Note: the previous one died because of one of the following (not sure which, maybe a combo): PSU, MSI VGA Fan Controller or 14.3 beta catalyst driver. Died on day 2 after several black screen crashes and only a couple of hours use :(.

Understandable, but it was probably just a dodgy sample :)

If the new one didn't have the same signs as the old one I would believe that...

If I run 3DMark with MSI VGA Fan Control open then the VRM temps and VDDC voltages go mental in GPU-Z, if I don't close the fan control it will then black screen.

I've replaced the PSU but I will be testing the old PSU (Corsair AX860) again sometime this week now that I know the software is somehow causing that.

Gogogo lightning owners.

My reference 290x from one of the release batches can hit 1281/1575 with elpida memory.

Want to see what these beasts can bench!

Do me a favour and run the Bioshock Infinite benchmark when its all clocked up, i can see one of these lightnings stealing one of the top spots with some luck!

MSI R9 290X Lightning now at 1120/1500

3DMark Fire Strike: 10742 - http://www.3dmark.com/fs/2053839
3DMark Fire Strike Extreme: 5532 - http://www.3dmark.com/fs/2053826

You need to go higher than that surely with that card :)

I bench my Gigabyte Windforce 290X with Epilda memory at 1175/1625 with a voltage increase of +100mv.

3DMark Fire Strike: 11036 - http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1641253
3DMark Fire Strike Extreme: 5720 - http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1641376

There are my scores which you should easily beat once you start pushing that Lightning to what its capable of.

I would love to get a Lightning to overclock and use but just cant justify it

No chance. That bench is Unreal Engine and it just favours Nvidia cards too much. Maybe at 4K the Radeons could take the lead, but below that any water cooled Titan's or TI's will be hard to stop.

Wow, you were on the money!

I gave it a brief run mining, fans at 75%, in a closed case, and temps never breached 74ºC. Gaming is much lower in both heat and fan noise.

Very happy with this card!

Can't be bothering with upping the voltage, are there any worthwhile gains to be made overclocking at stock volts?

sorry for the late reply mate only just seen it, for gaming i find the stock clocks fine i only overclock for a bit of fun and benching.
on stock voltage the core topped out at 1130 and im still fiddeling with the memory but dispite being hynix i cant seem to push it too far or i get the dreaded black screen, ive only got up to 1330 at the mo god knows how some are hitting 1500/1600

Adding more core voltage will allow you to overclock the memory further mate.

Cheers, I'll give 1100/1300 a go, can't argue with a free boost, regardless of small it may be :)

im just trying to find the max oc before adding voltage, it looks to be 1130/1400 now, next stop more voltage but going to have to wait i dont think i could stand to watch another round of heaven for a bit
