R9 290X Owners Thread

If you are looking for a reference 290x, i would look at the tri-x ones. PCB is reference and cooler is a beast in case you need to put it back on air. Also meant to be decent clcokers but than again, so is the lightning.

Why DSR?

Was it unimpressive?

unimpressive yes. Its throttling at +400mV which is about 1.6v. My REFERENCE 290x didnt do that, or my 290p. So i guess MSI put some lock on the card. So yea, this purchase was a waste of time and money on my part. It does 1235/1650 stable for gaming though so thats good.

Yeah I can do 1225/1600 24/7 which is more than most reference cards. Also, it's dead silent. So it's probably arguably the best 290X all round, cooler is a brute. But for all out benching ironically you're better off with a reference PCB I reckon

The thing is, your memory control makes me super jealous, am considering one just because of it. My reference is a superb core clocker but memory gives up at around 1585 and i feel its holding me back in benchmarks by a fair amount.

What did you manage to bench your core up to with +300-400 before throttling?

Only 1310~

:( silicon lottery at work
As much as it would take nice chips from other versions would be nice to see Top end cards like lightnings binned so users get a good return on their investment

I made a request for any binned ones but apparently there aren't any :p

Either way as this isn't going to be used for gaming (least not at the moment) there is probably not a lot of point putting it on water. If the card wasn't throttling it would probably still do 1320-1340 with 1.6-5

They probably are binned, just MSI clocking standards are lower than enthusiasts and bench markers. Not all that surprising really if you consider how modest the factory clocks are on even the more expensive 290xs.

Do you know why it was throttling?

These are cards made for ln2, so you would assume that it wouldn't have a built in voltage limit.

Being that some of the higher clocking reference cards were in the 1300 clock range I had misinformed expectations. A lot of users on OCN were happy with 1220 core range. I put 300mv through mine on the stock cooler and was flamed for it but it takes it really well, the cooler is the best thing about this card. I think MSI have put limitations on this not so dissimilar to NV greenlight. Something that isn't present on the reference design AFAIK. There haven't been enough users pushing the cards far enough to comment, or least not that have come forward.

Edit: no I don't know why, rangers obviously pushed his further on water. I assumed initially this was partly the problem.
