R9 290X Owners Thread

On a gaming site I visit semi-regularly a guy tried convincing me that Mantle gives no performance increase lol

At normal resolutions there are very decent gains and more importantly the minimums are higher than DX11.

If you're heavily gpu limited the gains will be smaller. 5%-10%. For multi gpu setups the increases are massive. Forget the fps, its the smoothness of it. I just wish it had a better showcase than BF4. As Kaap has said, the bf4 implementation uses a lot of vram. Still its beta and we should be patient, but its frustrating when you've seen a small glimpse of what it can do. Get to work Dice.

Yup. The funny thing is the guy had a Phenom II also

Are you not using the cm 690 iii?

What temps did you reach with one card?

Yeah the build is in my sig, you can click it.

690 III doesn't come with any top case fans installed, might need to add a couple.

Temps were really nice with one card, 60c's and 70c's during load in gaming etc. Two cards really does add a whole lot of heat, my Antec 920 Push / Pull probably can't get it out the case quick enough :p

Will look for some more case fans.

Performance on these cards is sick. Only paid for one card, other was a freebie in return for some builds. Pretty chuffed with the setup. Roll on 20nm though, OC these to 1200 core each and think my 850W couldn't cope instant power down lol.

Less heat / power use and this kind of performance or better on 20nm would be awesome.

I hit high 70's today with one card in my cm 690 ii 45% fan speed on the card

The card may be fine to run in the 90's, problem is it raises the temp of everything else along with it.

Watercooling would be ideal, I'm just gonna add more exhaust fans and hope for the best.

I'll have the last laugh in winter.

Eh, not so much on the reference cooler, which we're (me, tom + reece) on. Granted if you had three or four of them then case temps would get higher. If you have good airflow and the reference cooler most of the heat goes out the rear though.

Hm, possibly, but not as much as a non-ref cooler blowing hot air up into the case. My CPU temps are quite a bit lower with reference cards.

You get the same problem with watercooling, it does not matter whether I use air or water to cool my 290Xs as the heat from them still gets dumped into my room.
