R9 290X Owners Thread

Posted this in the wrong thread by accident lol. I believe I said I would post a picture sooo... just before I switched them out for a 295X2 :D ;)

They were such a good deal! But sadly I just couldn't live with the sound even while wearing headphones. Which as a shame as they really looked fantastic in there. If only the Radeon wording was also painted red!

Anyway. I switched them for a single 295 X2 and it's much better ^_^ best temps and noise of *any* SLI setup I have used.

Edit: Hey Matt. Any chance of getting one of those little official AMD radeon case badges? The front of my case looks a little bare :( hehe. Also I know this is a 290X thread, but is it safe to change the fan on the 295X2 with a Corsair SP120? Will it cause any issues with fan speeds if it's hooked up to the card? I'd like to match the fan with my case :)

Oooo. I hope on AMDs next cards they improve the reference cooler, maybe make it metal? Add a backplate. Have the Radeon logo glowing red. Would be perfect. Also open that back end of the card a little more because I have been disappointed by how poorly ALL graphics cards seem to deal with close proximity SLI. Monster airflow needed. I'd love to see a cooler design that really eliminates that problem. Could they not have air being drawn in from the sides and back? Hmm.

Hasn't AMD hired a South Korean firm (can't remember their name) to do their new coolers for them? Sure I saw it posted here just over a month ago if not longer. The company i'm talking about already sells cooling stuff for graphics cards.

Well that gets the Kaapstad stamp of approval.:D:cool:

Post a pic of them installed and I will put you on the "Roll of Honour".:)

Haha, unfortunately, it was not planned at all. I just saw them dirt cheap and they had 5, thought why not take 'em all. :D

I doubt my AX860 will handle more than 2 of these..:p

Got the MSI gaming under water now, load temps peak out at 60c, is silent. More performance it doesn't seem to throttle at all now. Core temp is high at idle, I'm guessing this could be related to having vram chips on the back of the card behind the GPU core as well as front of the card.

Will be posting some Quad Crossfire 4K benchmarks in a few days as I've got my new system up and running. Early results would indicate the reference 290X cooler is still going strong and is more than a match for even water cooled cards. :D ;)

as long as your as deaf as a post lol

Ill take my water cooled card at 55 degrees and silent any day over the standard cooler.

I know it would be more expensive but I do hope AMD improve the stock cooler on the 380X or whatever its going to be called.

How about posting a video with audio to see how loud they sound during gaming :p

Are there actually any versions of the 290x with quieter air coolers?

I have just bought the MSI Lightning Edition and it's certainly not the shy and retiring type when it is under duress... I am just trying to reassure myself that I could not have bought a more discreet version.

I've heard the LIghtning is one of the quietest and coolest.

The Tri-X and Vapor-X cards are among the quietest.

I have a Tri-X and it's no more than a slight whoosh under gaming load.

That is what I had heard as well and I was "umming and ahhing" between the Lightning and the Vapor-X.

It is not terrible by any means but possibly louder than I was expecting.

It is a bit of a whoosh noise under gaming load and if I manually set the fans higher then it starts moving towards hand-dryer territory.
