Updated my computer now, taken out the P67/3770k @ 4.5GHz and put in a X79A/3820 @4.625 GHz and updated to Win 8.1 Pro from 7.

My firestrike graphics score is now 11142 and I'm running at 1090/1450.

To the people that are running loud, have you used Gibbo's settings from earlier in the thread? Setting a temp target of 90c and a max fan speed of 70% makes it relatively quiet. Mine has replaced a watercooled so silent 7970 and I can honestly say that the noise its putting out with those settings isn't intrusive.

SOLVED for now.
Uninstalled gpu Z
Flashed asus
OC 1100/[email protected] NO ARTEFACTS :)

Card iddling at 500/2500 settings i can cope with that cause...
FLICKERING IS GONE !!!!!!

LT called it Mr Zed. :)

Now get benching. :D

As i expected. I think the problem is people aren't quite used to how this works what with the new setup in overdrive.

Get that hanky out again

Just tried my other two cards, still more in the tank

These are my other two cards having a run, could have got more if I had overclocked my CPU a bit more.

Score 19437

AMD Radeon R9 290X(2x) @1185/1600

Intel Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition Processor @4.8

Graphics Score 24745

Physics Score 17438

Combined Score 7977

Not had any of these problems thankfully,

Matt check out my new firestrike, firestrike extreme and 3dmark 11 scores;)

Will do mate. Just saw Kaap's score below. 3rd place. He's bound to smash it once he gets it under water i reckon.

I saw man, very impressive. :)

Impressive Kaap. Havent worked out how to change/see voltages in GPUtweak yet - other than the power limit - or are you using something else?

I find the card no noisier than when I had the day-1 reference 7970 but noticeably faster. Even though I'd flashed them to the GHz edition BIOS - which hopefully will be possible in a few weeks when some non-ref BIOS come out.

Don't care about temps if AMD are warranting them - gets toasty under overclocking on the limits but in games barely noticeable..

In my Corsair 800D with the 4770K under the Corsair H100i and 1.5TB of SSD it only occasionally gets to the 95c and throttles a touch - some warm air coming out the back which is what you want rather than into the case.

No coil whine on my Asus - or whining from me for that matter. Very happy with the card. No intentions of returning it.

Some of the problems are driver/bios (fan profiles) related and some are people using utilities which don't understand the card creating the issues - newer betas of GPU-Z and Afterburner which should be due in coming days will fix most of those.

am I right in thinking if the 3rd party coolers are better - the boost clocks will be higher ?

therefore even stock to stock - the 3rd party cooled 290x will be quicker out of the box ?

so not to bring any hate here, is it worth buying NOW 2x 290X with ref cooler? or wait 1-2 months for non-ref? or just go with gtx 780 SLI?

I will be using them for a 1080p gaming so fan @ 100% wont be needed, will it still be too loud this question is to guys that own a R9 290X

and i do use headset (Tritton Ax Pro+) so it does make the sound or anything a bit quieter tho.

thank you.
Hi this was my dilemma but I've decided to go 780 sli as I'm wanting as quiet as possible even though I wear an astro a40 headset :)

Yes, with the temp target at 95c if its cooler it will let the card run faster before it gets to 95c - perhaps not even getting there. As it is currently then it sometimes throttles the gpu speed back until temps get under 95c.

There just arent many coolers available yet until mountings get sorted out. There are some EK blocks coming and some coolers are thought to work but little else confirmed yet other than the MK26's that OcUK sell and maybe the odd other one. Though I'm not sure I see the point as they would just expel hot air into the case to warm everything else up rather than the blower types pushing it out of the case.

best i could get on firestrike without flashing (clocks 1085/1375). il probably wait and see if afterburner will support voltage before i flash to asus. i ran heaven but even though the core was on 70deg i could see the core clock being throttled towards the end of the run. i bumped my 920 upto 4.2 also.
