R9 290X Owners Thread

Switched to windows 8.1 today... No end of grief with it!!

started this morning pretty much and only am i installing stuff like steam, origin etc.

My biggest problem has been either the amd drivers or windows going crazy.

Booting into the desktop would result in an instant black screen which locked the system.

Feeling your pain. I'm struggling with the 8.1 mouse lag bug. Going to be going back to 8.0 tomorrow.

Well as of right now i'm eating humble pie, after throwing my toys out of the pram about the noise, instability and heat i probably didnt give the cards much of a chance.

After playing this weekend i have concluded that the r9 290x is a superb card and well worth the money.

After some playing i have managed to overclock to a respectable 1150 / 1500 on stock volts and bios (sapphire) in a crossfire setup which is my max stable without voltage control and proper cooling.

For general gaming i just stick to the stock clocks and quiet mode and its eating everything i throw at it at 2560x1440 and i hardly notice it.

I think my first impression was clouded because the first thing i did was crank it up and just benchmarked where what i should have done is play games which is what i bought them for.

What i'm really loving is for the first time in ages i can actually run with my case side on without worrying about a huge tripple fan card heat soaking everything around it, and yes i have plenty of airflow.

I'm still not a huge fan of the stock cooler as i think it could have been better however this probably would have come at a price premium so on the value side of things its fantastic.

Would i recommend this card to a friend over a 780 ? (i own both) yes i would.

Would i recommend crossfire ? well let me put it this way, i have owned 4 crossfire configurations , 4890x2 , 7950x2 , 7970x2 and a 7990 , all of which i have had more issues with than not, however 290x crossfire ? well i'm astounded by how far the hardware and the drivers have come, its superb and i now have zero regretts.

The bottome line is that yes its hot but it doesnt cause any issues, yes it can be loud but all AMD ref coolers are loud when pushed hard but what your getting for your money is a superb value top tier card that will eat any game you throw at it.

@darket - nice to see someone who really enjoys their card?

To everyone else, my 290x is coming tomorrow, I ordered it elsewhere because after the currency convert it was quite a bit more than just buying it here in the states. What is the most stable driver release so far? There are so many on AMD's site to choose from, or should I stick with the disc drivers as a few of you have suggested?

Fair do's.

Anyone finding that there's no difference when switching between quiet and uber mode? In both cases maximum fan speed is set to 40% (haven't seen 55%). I'm running the beta 6 drivers. :(

So are people happy with these cards?

I get asked all the time for advice and working in returns/tech I usually only hear the complaints. No one ever rings me up to tell me how ace the item is they just bought :(

A quick list of the pros and cons would help me explain it to people if anyone would be so kind :)

Negatives are
Poor stock cooler, hot running and not quiet.
