R9 290X Owners Thread

I've had two similar occurrences - since I put beta8 on. It goes to a black screen and nothing I can do can wake it up again. If I leave it as I did on both occasions after about 10 mins the fan on the GPU goes to 100% (loud) and I have to hold down the power button. The GPU was overclocked but I was in the desktop both times so it should have been at desktop speeds. Only chrome was running (unless its GPU accelleration decided to kick in).

I've gone back to stock clocks for now and will see if it happens again. It didnt happen all last week on beta6 or 7 only since I put on beta8 on sunday.

Yeah, exactly the same. We have very different systems too. In Battlefield, or other games?

Well, i'm comforted by how many people have the issue. Can't be a hardware problem, it's across vendors. Hopefully a fix will come soon.

I've not had a blackscreen of death since I uninstalled GPU Tweak. However I can't seem to stay on a BF4 server long enough to say it really has fixed it, I either get kicked off coz the server crashes or the client crashes "normally".

Would any of you lot think it would be safe to flash the bios to PT3 and stick 1.4 volts into the card?

I have a Asus 290x with stock bios, the Vdroop drops the volts so I never hit 1.4 and PT3 disables Vdroop.

Im underwater so I cant see temps being a issue.

I have hit over 19K gfx score on 3dmark 11 on stock asus bios. Im sure I could go much higher, what do you think?

You should be fine to do so Scramz as long as your temps are fine. People were putting 1.4 through there 7970's on good air cooling for bench runs. I got a feeling some people on water will go above 1.4v at some point. I was reading a little about the pt3 bios and i would not go straight to 1.4v. The reason is people are saying setting 1.3v could be giving you 1.33 and so on as you set the voltage higher. Start from 1.3 and work your way up to check stability and temps.

I getting 1.375 volts out of the card and it is topping 50 degrees on water after hours of benching.

I would settle at 1.4v and leave it at that to see how people get on around the internet. Should get more of a picture of whats safe with these cards. 50 oc is still pretty good considering the voltage and the stock cooler temps.

Me too i get the black screen on bf4 but only when the card is overclocked.
Hope new drivers fix this or maybe its gputweak.

I noticed yesterday I had the same issue. Does anyone know when this new improved driver in released? You would think it will today with the 290 release

I'm not running an overclock, but am in uber mode. Fan still never goes about 40% though, so i guess it thinks the temps are OK?

Had the black screen in both uber and normal mode, too.

Are people getting the 100% GPU fan speeds too - it happens about 5-10 mins after the blank screen - I left it alone to see if it would come back or not and it goes into this full-fan-speed mode and I have to use the power-button-hold-down to power it off. The GPU was at 1150/5800/150%/uber/stock-volts - but I was in the desktop both times so it should have been much lower (chrome gpu acceleration permitting).

Will see if it happens tonight and revert to beta7 if it does - only heard about these "new drivers" from matts post - though Gibbo seemed to be saying beta8 were "it" (for now).
