Hi,

So my friend has an ASUS R9 290X but he gets terrible fps in any game when he Plays Online and sometimes when its offline (performance is better though). This card was an upgrade over his old card which he currently is using and it out performs the card. Its just at standard 1080p and it doesnt matter what his video settings are it still stays around 5fps with the R9 290X His specs are below:

AMD FX-4350
16GB RAM
ASUS R9 290X
Gigabyte UD990FXA (or something along those lines)
500GB SSD

he has tried everything, He has even tried the beta drivers and it still doesn't help, Any insight would help a lot.

is it possible his CPU Is causing a bottleneck?

Thanks

5FPS with the 290X, sounds like something is going wrong.

+1 for what relentless said, also check temperatures of the card.

That's the only way you are going to confirm your suspicions of bottlenecking

Install afterburner and Riva Server and switch on the overlay, play a game and monitor the GPU usage for a while, if it keeps dipping or stays low there's your issue

More than likey needs to overclock the cpu.

He should be managing to run everything okay at 1080p. Nothing there should be causing performance like that. Sure it's not a great cpu but it is a 4 core Piledriver and that means it's better than my old Phenom II which along with a 2gb 7850 ran games great with tweaks.

Obviously he can't expect to max everything, My 290x used to run low numbers in titles like FC4 if I had everything on as high as possible with a 4770k so he needs to be tweaking things and if he is and getting poor performance there is a problem.

He shouldn't be having an issue - check if the motherboard is throttling the PSU as soem Gigabyte ones did that and will need a BIOS update.

Also,what PSU does he have??

In a cpu bottlenecked situation, the card wouldn't perform worse than a lesser one. That's not the cause of the issue here.

As above, I'd update the motherboard bios to the latest.

Also, monitor the GPU temps at load. It'll throttle back if it gets too hot.

Sorry for late reply

I dont think that is the issue if he can play the game completely fine on his lower end card.

Whats his GPU usage in game?

His GPU Usage sits around 50%-60% sometimes not even that

I have the same GPU, similar board and an FX8350 and have no issues at all

Once you got it did you have to update your BIOS or anything? His Motherboard only has 2 BIOS Updates which i believe he has done

His PSU Is a Corsair 850W RM Series.

Check there is good airflow through the case - the 290x is a warm little sucker (but can handle it) - and can throttle when hot.

Check the PCIe speeds (in GPU-Z - also check how much time GPU it spending on its max speed on sensors tab) - perhaps re-install chipset drivers and do clean removal (run DDU) and re-install of GPU drivers.
