Hi guys i have just added a ek thermosphere waterblock to my msi 390 and it idles at 28c and max temp is 42c gaming benchmark ect which is great.

But using my bitfenix recon temp sensors on the ram chips there reaching 47c is this safe for gpu ram temp wise? I have nodded the original heat sink to blow air over vrm on back of pcb but the ram has heatsinks only that I fitted

Just unsure of safe temps for the gou ram is 47c to high

47c is nothing, they would be fine upto 80c

Well that's good to know I was unsure new to water cooling gpu's grateful for the advice and peace of mind not cheapest card to brick haha

Also tonyturbo 78 the ek thermosphere is a gpu only block not full cover buddy that's how it fits.

I did have to cut the heat transfer plate so my compression fittings would go on as its wider than the gpu pcb but a fair amount will upload pic

Here she is fitted

I have nodded my air 540 case so I have a 140mm fan blowing up onto gpu from case floor to aid cooling

I'm not 100% happy with the look but as its not reference card best I could do with what I had to work with

Ignore the great hole in case floor waiting on so red carbon fibre sheet to blank off right of fan. Originally had 2 140mm fans but had to loose one for fad and fittings

It's been said a few times that it's non-ref.

Only the xfx 390/x has compatibility with ek 290/x blocks.

also the asus dc2 390 is compatible with 290x full cover block according to ek website..

But I brought the msi as its overclocked out the box and has good reports of overclocking well.

also tonyturbo78 I stated myself I'm not 100 per cent happy with looks but its all I could do with the card I have and it works, so does me! and I cant afford to replace it wife would kill me lol I didn't think at the time about waterblock.

I could have brought a compatible 390 for full cover but at the time had no intention of going water on gpu, but my case looked bare with just the cpu on custom loop may throw it in my sons rig and get a full cover and gpu some point in future. or hang on until new gpus arrive

but to sum it up its 1100 core and 1600 memory with no voltage change, games on ultra all day long and it runs @ a max temp of 47c I'm happy with that

for now!! hehe

wasn't knocking it mate, looks ok actually, pretty good idea. I dont think I'd cut a cooler, but your results are really good. Well done.

Oh no I wasn't thinking the bud its ok. Its hard to put a convo together through words wasn't having ago bud

I must admit when I cut cooler I thought OMG what have I done??

Second was well there goes warranty haha

Brave or daft unsure lol

I'm a go big or go home kinda guy and I'm at point of no return now lol

Nothing wrong with your diy mod's, it seems to be working well.
My criticsm would be that with the decent cooling you aren't playing with voltage and clockspeeds, so stop being a girl and see what it can do.

^^^^^^^^^^

I second this. I'm hitting 1150MHz on the core of mine at stock volts, I'm on air, they are in crossfire and hotter than yours lol. Now get it up over 1200MHz on the core for the love of overclocking :D:p

I third this haha

I guess I'm ok with overclocking cpu amd chips but never really had ago at gpu

I've bumped the core and mem slightly but unsure about core voltage and power limit ect

My power limit goes +50 so I guess same applies as cpu add tad to core voltage bump up and up little at a time??

What's a safe voltage for the r9 390 just tried 1150 core and screen flashing like hell

Stock core voltage
+30 on power limit

Doesn't like anything over 1100
Men 1600 on stock voltage

Generally 1.25v should see you at 1120-1150mhz, and 1.3v should see 1180-1200.
With your cooling mods I should think that providing the chip scales with voltage effectively, then 1.3v-1.35v shouldn't a problem.

If it only held 1150 at 1.25 and only managed 1180 at 1.35v then it would be pointless running that extra voltage for 30mhz. So I guess you'll have to see what it'll do.

I just whack on +50 power limit and be done with it. When I overclock above 1150 on the core, I add 10mv a time and do a couple passes of Unigine Heaven and watch for artifacts and hard crashes. At that point when it crashed I just whack another 10mv at it and re-run again.

For the record I managed to get 1205 out of mine using 1.3v but using crossfire my cards were to hot for gaming, so only for benching really...but I'm really happy with 1150MHz Core and 1500MHz on the memory all on stock volts. Plus overclocking the memory doesn't really give you much extra, so I just keep mine at stock.

So after playing around I managed 1200 core 1700 memory max temp core 50

Ram chips 54
Vrm 49
Both checked with bitfenix recon sensors attached to them

So I did + 80% core voltage
+50mv aux voltage (seems to help a lot with stabilizing memory)

And + 40 power limit temps are still very cool

Hoping to see slightly lower temps soon as my rad fans are poor air flow fans most of air is bouncing off rad I have ordered ek vadar fans for gpu rad as i cant feel much air passing through

But still cool temps

I ran firestrike and got just over 14000 gpu score

Not flickering ect but while running games I get messaged fame stopped working and closes overclock or windows 10??
