Hi guys, hoping someone can help.

This morning i ended up buying the R9 Nitro 390 for £205, however having had time later tonight to research more i realised my current PSU may not be able to handle it - so i am thinking of returning it and getting the Strix 970 (£20 cashback, +1yr warranty) instead.

My current build is:

Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK Intel Z97
I5 4690K
7850 HD 2GB
2x SSD
2x SATA
XFX Pro 550w (bought 2012)

Would my current PSU be enough for a 390, or would i have to fork out for a new one? Having seen the EVGA 750 for around £90. However if i get the 970 the 550w should be enough? Meaning i wont have to spend another £90 to power the 390.

Thanks for any help :)

TDP on the 5820k is 140w whereas 4690k is 88w, does this means i still have headroom to overclock the 390/4690k more? Currently no OC on the 4690 as 7850 is struggling as it is in current gen games at higher settings.

Surpising as reviews/other topics on here says 600w-700w min for the 390 yet going through a few benchmarks it ranges from 320 draw to 450w+ draw for super high end configs.

When I still had my 2 x 970 SLI + OC i5 3570K I was seeing 550W total power draw in stress testing according to my Corsair PSU software and an at the wall meter.

So yeah a 550W PSU should be adequate but it's worth checking the max amps supplied on the 12V rails. The sticker on the side of the PSU will show the break down of the varruos voltage phases.

So recommending a particular wattage of PSU isn't the only metric but generally you do expect a more poweful PSU to supply higher peak amps per rail. That's also why a lot of modern PSUs have a common rail now rather than multiple or like mine can switch between modes.

Not able to get in it at the moment but i did find this picture at least, exact same PSU as i have;

Will it be enough?

So it turns out it does have enough power...however it only has 1x6pin PCI-E and 1x8pin 12v...and the 390 needs 2x8pin.

Will it be safe to use a molex>8pin converter or is it new PSU time?

Did the GPU not come with a twin molex to 8-pin connector?

I wouldn't use a single molex to 8-pin...

A 6 pin pcie to 8 pin pcie cable would be better than using a molex cable. I don't know if OCUK stock them so you might have to google it.

Hah cheers guys, friend suggested molex>8pin and i didn't even think to look for pci-pcie2 while searching d'oh.

All that was in the box was a DVI>VGA adaptor unfort, ordered and sorted :)
