Race Training

A friend of my yesterday mentioned he was looking into doing some 'race training' or a similar sort of driving experience.

It sounds like something I'd quite like to do and could very well be useful for me if I decide to get on track at somepoint (which will eventually happen no doubt!) and could well save me from binning it on the first courner :p

He had found one for around £200 but it was miles away in York so we were looking for something a bit closer. We're located North West London (Junction 18M25) and google brought up this:

Not a particulary exciting choice of car looks like good fun none the less and quite similar to my current (Clio 182). Plus I'd also have an 'MSA Comeptition License' whatever that is?! I'd come away from it with a qualification as well as the experience.

I've seen other courses for around £500 which is a bit much, race tuition and then 10 laps in a sports saloon and then 50 in a single seater. Looks like good fun but a bit out of budget really! I could possibly get a small group of mates together but probaly not a group big enough to entitle us to any sort of discount.

So if any of you have any recommendations or places you've used and rate highly? Any experiences/suggestions are more than welcome :)

Thanks

The MSA Licence is the licence you need to be allowed to go racing. Completing the ARDS test is a requirement for getting the licence however I wouldn't really describe it as training, it's more more of an assesment to ensure that you won't be a danger to other racers and marshalls etc. Sure you might learn a thing or two from it but as a starting off point it's probably not really appropriate.

Price seems pretty good though.

Most race tracks offer driving tuition. There's a rally driving school that I remember Housey recommending, not cheap mind.

Thanks for the reply.

So I would need an MSA license for a track day? or if I was to compete in a series or races/events? (the latter being unlikely).

I think I'll get in touch with them and see what it actually involves.

I don't think so, track days are not races.

You only need the right licenses and stuff if you want to actually race.

Yeah I'd love to do that rally school but I don't have 9 other friends to do it with me to make it affordable!

Interesting. We might give a ring around some local tracks and see what they can offer tuition wise. Thanks.

If you want to do it right spend more, if you don't, have a few laps in a crap car or fewer in a good car. No short cuts unless you know people in the game I'm afraid and even then £200 might get your their time for half a day, you still have to find a track, pay the fee.....and provide a car.
