Hi all,

Finally my wife has shown some interest in computer gaming, and is interested in getting into a racing car game.

With her birthday coming up, I would like to get her a game, along with steering wheel and pedals.

As a FPS and MMO gamer, I have no idea what the latest and greatest racing car games are. Colin McRae rally seems to be quite popular? Something with multiplayer options might be quite cool also.

Her PC is not the greatest spec - Athlon 2500 + 7600GS + 2GB ram. I may even hook it up to our media centre PC on the 42" plasma for her (PC specs about the same as above).

Any suggestions on games and controls would be really helpful. Many thanks for any help or pointers.

Depends on what style of racing game you're after I suppose.

Arcade style racers:
Need for speed series (most wanted, Carbon etc).
Flatout 2
Test drive unlimited.

Simulations:
GT Legends
GTR2
Rfactor
LFS
Race06 or 07.

Or for something in between you could try TOCA 3 or the Colin McCrae games, I doubt Dirt will run on that system though, infact I'm not to sure how well any of these will run on that CPU.

LFS should run on that system, might get a little laggy with fuller grids though. It is best played online, racing the AI is rubbish compared to banging virtual doors with real people.

You could get the demo and try it out - www.lfs.net, it is the full game with locked content, so it will run exactly the same

Logitech G25 is the daddy of wheels, the Momo and Driving Force Pro are also highly rated.

How did you get her into gaming, any tips gratefully appreciated :D

As for games im sure flatout 2 would be a great start as its so much fun for a novice, steering wheel and pedals will help too, Im going to ask for a G25 setup for my birthday in the hope that if shes paid for it she may (and thats a big may) just want to give it a try.

i dont think lfs would be a good choice, it very hard to find a server with people wanting to race and not just ram u off if you try to overtake may put her off gaming again.

testdrive and flatout are 2 diff styles but both a lot of fun especialy flatout multiplayer.

Well it depends on whats her taste in driving games.

Might be worth downloading a few demos like:-

Live for Speed - Full on sim
Colin McRae Dirt - Arcadey sim, looks nice too
Trackmania United - Full on Arcade with loads of ways to play. It also rocks in multiplayer too.
Flatout 2 - Great arcade game with a fantastic damage model. Loads of fun if you like smashing up cars.

This is the case with some of the demo servers, but is very rare in S2 servers.

The CTRA tiered servers are exactly what someone new to the game should be looking for to improve their speed and racecraft.

Flatout 2 is the best racer on pc after much deliberation the others are just too distant and professional.
Test drive unlimited and need for speed most wanted are also worthy of considering.
