Rack mount servers

All it is is a form factor, really. It's still the same ol' bits 'n bobs that you'd see in a tower server. The only difference, perhaps, is a lack of video out as most servers are administered remotely through SSH or some other remote shell application. However, most have a VGA port and support at least VGA resolutions for when you're performing your initial setup.

Thought as much. Thanks. And the server we're ordering does come with VGA so all is well...

umm, almost any generic rack server (hp, ibm, dell...) in the last 5 years has a video output capablr of xga at least, there are no problems here. some specialist boxes (sun boxes in particular) do without vga but it's very unusual

Eh? Every Dell, or HP/Compaq server I've configured have had standard VGA outputs.

Only things like firewalls, switches, and Unix type machines (Solaris, HPUX, etc) don't have VGA ports.

Simple to install are they? Any major differences it would be worth me knowing about; i've not had much experience with them before.

Thanks
If you're talking about installing components, it's pretty much the same as your run-of-the-mill desktop system. Things are usually arranged a little differently, and you will have to use riser cards and low-profile heatsinks if you're using a <3U (I think) case, but otherwise it is the same :)

Thanks for the info guys. Yeah, it's 2U..Dell 2950 to be precise. Quite excited having it delivered...massive things going on where i work and i'm right smack-bang in the middle of it all. :)
