Greetings, im putting together a spec for a rack mounted pc or server that will run Windows XP Sp2 and Cisco Monitor Manager.

Im looking to implement an appliance that can be deployed at a customer site for local SNMP monitoring at a reasonable cost < £500 but has redundancy.

Now im having trouble finding a rack based Pc solution and would normally be straight onto the my preferred supplied HP unfortunately there platform which would do the job is the Dl140 but isn't good on cost.

I feel sick for saying it and shall never forgive myself but Dell sell the PowerEdge R200 which comes in at a reasonable price minus the Win Xp licensing.

Would any of your kind folks know of a manufacturer that builds and sells a rack mounted Pc's without pointing me to a competitor.

Alternatively email me at extropedia at btinternet.com

Regards

You can get the more basic HP ProLiant stuff for around the £500 mark, however once you have added what you need to the system (the cheapest HP stuff does not come fitted with a secondary redundant psu as standard for instance) it is realistically going to cost more. IBM also do rack-mount kit although I have next to no experience with that, really I do not know what it is like, but I suspect being IBM, it'll be pretty damn solid. All in all though, at the price point you want, Dell is probably your only realistic option.

Try typing 'cheap rack mounted servers' into Google.co.uk and see what it turns up. I guess you have already though

I wouldn't think twice about getting that model of dell for that money, seems very good value for money. Having said that I do like dell servers & usually have very good experience with them, once the crummy broadcom nics have been replaced with intel items :)
