Howdy.

I need to buy / build (buy ideally) a 1U 19" Rackmount computer but I can't see much of a choice for what I'm after.

Doesn't need to be a server. All i'm after is a machine that I can bolt in and that contains:

Intel P4 (need not be more than 3GHz)
1 GB RAM
No more than 80 GB HDD
CDRW
Ethernet Card

..and that's about it.

Ideally I'd like it to cost under £600.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

You can get a Dell SC1425 for around £350 (depending on your account manager etc). Base spec is Xeon 3.2Ghz/512MB RAM/80Gb SATA drive. Although if you're looking to co-lo a single machine I would recommend that you think again. You will have issues if there is ever a hardware problem (can you afford to keep spares on site/pay for the Dell 4 hour response warranty?)

Rackmount machines tend to be incredibly noisy though, so it's not the sort of stuff you want at home. They tend to contain small, high RPM fans (think Delta Screamers) to get the airflow through the case.

Its worth scanning the bay from time to time. My mate picked up a 3 or 4U reacmount server with dual Xeon 3.4Ghz, 2gb ram, 2x74gb SCSI320 harddrives, dual gigabit ethernet etc etc for £400 ish. Some real bargains to be had now and then.

Cheers for the replies guys.

By 19", I refer to the standard width of most rack-based units.

Once said unit has been spec'd and procured, it will have the enviable luxury of being installed in our technology room at work. It will be connected to a newly purchased firewall (Juniper NetScreen 5GT) and be used to host related Internet connectivity security applications (Internet content filtering, antivirus, antispam etc).

Our tech room is soundproofed and heavily airconditioned, so no real concerns about heat or noise. Really, just needs to be cheap and reliable.
