Okay Guys & Ladies.
So Yesterday I was playing COD WAW for the first time since I had my 9600GT, as i'm at university and havn't had Time to play.

The games on maximum settings, and it's the first time i've played on my XFX HD 4870. It can play the game fine on max settings, 4X Anti-Aliasing ETC.

Then all of a sudden my pc, shut itself down, restarted, looked at EVEREST Ultimate, and wham GPU Memory Diode is at 148 degrees celcius.

Luckilly for me, the card appears fine, no artifacts or anything.
I removed the stock cooler, as it was aweful and installed the Akasa Vortexx Neo cooler.

Idles at around 72 degrees Celcius and under load, well there you have it 148 degrees Celcius.

The case is a NZXT Lexa Blackline, and has 3, (2X 120mm & 80mm) Intake fans, and 2 Exhaust Fans (80 & 120mm).

CPU, Pentium Stock cooler, CPU Under load at around 36 degrees.
What's going on, the cooler is only around 4months old.

Looking at recent reviews for the Akasa Vortexx people are getting really good temperatures on their 4870, sadly I don't.

Can anyone reccomend a different and good cooler for my 4870, I really don't want to go watercooled (Too Expensive).

Thanks, Emphacy.

This ain't right. 148° eh? Thermal trip is set way less than this, iirc at either 110° or 115° so I'm amazed at how the temps can rise above this.

I have the 1Gb GS Sonic, never goes above 65° under full whack. Vortexx is an adequate cooler ... you put TIM on that m8?? Even without, shouldn't be getting temps like that ... had the card long?

Edit: Just reccied ur location, just put it outside the back door man, it's cold enuff ;)

Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo, I used one of them when I had my 4870 and it was superb.
Are you sure that's not the vrm temps your getting? That was the sort of temps my vrm's were hitting until I slapped the AC on to get the temps under control.

well...
The card is around 6months old, a friend sold it to me for £50 as he bought a 5850 (lucky bugger).

I used the thermal paste provided with the Vortexx cooler, and the thermal pads supplied for the memory chips.

Last time I checked, (when I installed cooler) everything was fine, but like I said, I've never done any gaming on this card since I installed it.

I'll run some kind of benchmark, check the Temps again, and if all looks the same, I'll pop off the cooler and take a look. I'm sure I have some AC Silver TIP Somewhere.

The GPU Diode is around 20 degrees lower than the Memory Diode, so I'm assuming theres a contact problem with the thermal pads.

Just reccied ur location, just put it outside the back door man, it's cold enuff

Haha, Tell me about it, unfortunately, I'd have to take my whole desk outside, and sadly, that's not an option. :(

Thanks for the replies though guys...

have you connected the fan power cable to a motherboard header that is regulated by the motherboard ? if you have set it to full power in the bios as it may be the fan is hardly spinning.

but you should still be getting lower temps than that if this is the case.
