Radeon 5850 Overclocking

I've recently bought a MSI Twin Frozr 5850, the one with two fans, pretty sweet looking.

With afterburner I can get it stable running @ 970 clock, 1300 memory @ 1.25volts.

I use furmark stable test in 1920 x 1080 with 8xMSAA with post effects on. Can run it for 30 minutes plus no problem, the temp doesnt go above 80c.

Can also run a number of benchmarks with these OC settings fine, temp never runs above 65-70.

However I cant get any game to run for more than 2 minutes without the graphics driver resetting, and usually crashing the game.

I can get games to run with the memory @ 1300mhz no problem, was playing Assassin's Creed 2 (came free with card) for hours. Just cannot get any game running for more than a few minutes with a core clock over 830.

Looking around I've seen this is quite a low overclock for the 5850's core. And considering this particular card I have has shown itself more than capable of the 970 core clock with furmurk (which I believe is a harder stress than most games) Im thinking the card itself should/can handle games with the 970 clock but it's driver issue's that I have.

Im running the 10.11 driver, have tried 10.10 and 10.50 also. Only have afterburner installed as OC software and don't have Catalyst Control Centre.

Any Idea's why this maybe anyone?

I agree with JTrickle...try lowering the memory clock. They have much lesser impact on frame rate if comparing to core clock...may be you can drop the memory clock back to default while keeping the core clock overclocked for now, and see if the problem still occur...if it doesn't, then work your way up for the memory clock from there.

im on 10.3s and can get 1000 core 1150 mem . you could try dropping the mem as that is close to its limit i think , then start upping the core

cheers
edit : beat me to it

As above, I'd say your memory is way to high. Work the core first and then the memory.

The reason it is passing AB or Furmark so easy is the settings you are using are too lite of a load on the card. Sounds contrary I know, use a lower resolution like 1024x768 or 1280x1024, NO-AA, Enable Xtreme burn mode and Post Processing. You will likely see it fail that test. Once you have it stable at those settings it should be game stable.

Remember the memory on 5800's has error checking so it will not artifact when pushed. You have to compare bench numbers to see how it is reacting. When performance stops increasing so should your clocks.

EDIT: huh...I'm a thug....lol

Cheers.

Right im still on 10.11 but got it stable in games at 920 core 1225 mem.

I lowered the memory down to 1000 and started playing with the core. Using the Furmark settings above, I had the test running at 940 not with artifacts but certain sections would start to shimmer, like you could see the shape of the fur ball underneath its fur, without the fur if you knew what I mean. It crashed at 950. It ran fine at 930 but I decided to go with 920.

Then lowered back to 725 to play with memory. Memory ran fine all the way upto 1300.
Tried games at 920 and 1300 seemed to work fine. Then remembered your error checking comment. Lowered memory to 1275 saw a slight increase in FPS, no difference between 1275 and 1225 then it started to decrease below this. So I think I got it right.

Thanks for the feedback, now enjoying Assassins Creed II, never played this type of game before but came free and it pretty cool.:p
