Hey guys, thinking of getting a new card, I currently have a faithful radeon 6970 that has served me well for about 3 years, it's starting to show signs of it's age now however, the stock heatsink and casing are starting to break from multiple cleans, it occasionally freezes up and crashes when in game (once a week?) I think it's just generally been battered.

The main game I play is WoW on ultra, running dual 1920x1080 monitors, one on DVI and one on HDMI.

What kind of card would I need to replace/futureproof now? How much would I have to spend to actually get something to outperform this old workhorse?

Entire rig is the top one in my signature if needed :)

**Thought - is it my cpu that bottlenecks wow? I get about 150fps on ultra in most dungeons and 25fps ish in very busy cities

Hi There,

WoW suits nVidia cards better and that CPU should be good to go. Depending on what other games you play and your budget could be a sway either way though. The 780 is a fantastic card and will rip through games with ease. The 290 is a good card as well but seems to be a bit of pot luck with the black screen issues and can be quite hot and loud if you don't have a good case with decent air flow. These are for the top end budgets mind.

I've always gone between AMD/Nvidia and AMD/Intel, not a fanboy of either, just think both are very good. the 780's are very expensive by the look of it, is there anything more middle of the road? I get the impression that my 6970 is still fairly formidable and will outperform sub £200 cards?

i had 6970 upgraded to 7950 in summer was good upgrade , then kinda side graded small graded to 770 gtx.

so anything 7950 or better would be a nice upgrade for you.

I'd go for a 4gb SC ACX 770 and clock it to FTW clocks. 4gb Vram Combined with decent clocks and that lovely cooler would make a great little rig for around the £270 mark.

+1 for 280X, tbh wow is so old now any new GPU will laugh at it in most situations, i think wow is more cpu dependant that GPU ? i know they do favour Nvidia cards but like i say its old software now and pure grunt force of newer cards powers past old optimisations.

Thanks for the advice guys :) 7950/280x sounds like it would work, will I notice a big performance jump? Or will it be fairly minor, back in the day 6970 was a bit of a beast :P I don't wanna spend £250+ for a marginal upgrade :O
