Radeon 7850 Temp Problem

I recently bought a Gigabyte Radeon 7850 and quite quickly I found that it was crashing when playing games, after anything between 10 minutes and an hour. I replaced my 600W generic brand PSU with a 750W Corsair but I'm still getting the same problem.

The card never seemed to go above 52C, so I ran memtest86 for hours with no problem to rule the memory out. CPU temp is also fine.

As a shot in the dark - despite thinking the card should be fine at 52c - I manually put the fan up to 100% and discovered I can play for hours on end (the card never gets above 45 or so). On auto fan, the driver doesn't really increase the speed at 52C, it goes from 40% to 42%

So... it appears the card is unstable at around 50c... is this normal? Should the drivers be automatically increasing the fan speed before then? Should I RMA the card?

Thanks in advance

I have had similar simptoms on certain games, a bit of googling pointed me to turning up the volts by about 0.1V (apparently due to a DX11 issue) and also some games dont play nice with lucid logic running and vise versa. all trial and error though.

as to why its crashing at 50c god knows, have you tried running a stress test to see if its a crash at all temps above 50? to answer the question though you should not be getting crashes from temp at 50c

try with power control slider in ccc/performance/overdrive set it to 20%,it just raises the thermal limit it wont add voltage, mine needs it or it will crash

temps are fine, its not temp related

Just had another crash with the power set to +20% :(

Setting the fan to 100% did seem to fix the issues so I'm not convinced it's not temperature related, however I have run FurMark benchmark on auto fan and it's fine - however this is only 15 minutes.

Can you suggest a stress test that runs for longer?

Gigabyte's own OC Guru has the default fan profile to go to 100% at 80C so you shouldn't have any problems at 52C.

I had the same issue with the fans not increasing in speed so I changed the profile to kick the fans to 100% at 50C as I found my card is throttling at 60-62C. Currently running it at 1100MHz Core and 5600MHz Memory at 1.2V without any problems (hits 59C in Unigine 4).

You might have a bad card, that is the only thing I can think of that would cause problems at 52C.

Davedree - yes, bought from OC, not labelled b grade - yes, black screen and looping sound is exactly it. Common problem?

yeah afraid so, it was originally identified as a fault with Sapphire 7870's but I think a lot of other pcb manufacturers of 7850 models that are affected share the same/similar fault too.

The 7870 fault was linked to a faulty capacitor causing bsod, Maybe there is a component on the pcb that is getting too hot and with your fans at 100% it keeps it cool. If you do rma you have to be a bit more informative that you need the card tested in a particular way. Another possible fix is flashng the gpu bios.

My housemates saph 7850 would do it just about after 1 hour but for us it was just an unstable overclock.

Thanks Dave. I actually flashed to the latest BIOS from Gigabyte yesterday (F.31) and getting the same error, so sounds like it's an RMA! OC have raised the RMA already so will get it back to them this week.

Thaks for the help.
