Radeon 7870 Eyefinity 6 problem

Hey guys,

My landlord recently visited some PC vendor, basically he was sold this Graphics card (Radeon 7870 - 6x Mini DP) and 4 extra monitors (since he already had 2).

The input ports on these monitors are AVG, DVI and HDMI (no DisplayPort), He was then sold 6x Mini DP -> HDMI (for the monitors), Only 2 monitors will work at one time.

I have been looking around and it appears that He can only have 2x Passive adapters and then must have 4x Active adapters in order to get all 6 monitors to work.

Would this be the adapter required inorder to get his setup to function correctly.

If he orders them and they are not a solution to his problem can he return them under the Distance Selling regulations?

Thats for dual link dvi so might be rather over powered depending on the monitors. Dual link dvi IIRC is for 1440p upwards.

I know sapphire do a mini dp to dvi (single) for about £30. Its what I use for my third screen without issue. It does require a usb port for power though so might be a problem depending on his pc mobo.

Isnt a 7870 a bit under powered for 6 way eyefinity?

As mynight said, that adapter will work but dual link is only needed for above 1920x1200 per screen, below that you can use a much cheaper single link adapter. OcUK don't sell any at the moment, but if you Google for "Active MDP to DVI" you should come up with options that you can get all 4 monitors connected for the price of just one dual link adapter.

As for the 7870 being underpowered, it depends what the PC is used for. If it's simply a huge amount if desktop, the 7870 will actually be overpowered, but if it's for demanding gaming been it'll definitely struggle.

We need pictures when it's up and running - multi screen setups are always awesome! :)

I second the pictures request :)

To help out with the google search, here are the terms I used when looking:

Active Mini DisplayPort to Single-Link DVI Adapter
Active Mini DisplayPort to Single-Link HDMI Adapter

They are typically £18-22 each.

Whoever sold him the passive ones should be chased up for a refund.

Cheers guys, I have a screenshot of my 4 screen build I'll post that here for now.

Once he has the other 4 screens operational (All 6) I'll take a photo.

Lovely :)

What monitors are they? I think I need a 4th now haha.

Very good point on the 7870 power confused stu. I automatically think intensive tasks when talking multi monitor don't consider some people just enjoy the real estate.
