hi ,

Just about to finally upgrade my C2D E8400 to to an i3 mobo/cpu .
Currently have a Radeon HD 5850 1024, would this card be good enough for 1680x1050 Far Cry 4 , Elite Dangerous.
If the cards still usable on modern games then i could put the money towards an i5 or i7 instead.

Also i have windows 7 oem , if i change the mobo cpu can i still use it or do i need another copy.

Technically you will need to get a new copy of windows, but you can always try the phone activation to see if you can keep it first.

That gpu has aged very well, and it would keep you chugging along for a while, but frankly 1gb of RAM is just not enough anymore.

The 5850 is still an ok card, I'd take a gamble that it'll work ok, especially as the low res'.

If you had the retail windows you can swap, but oem is tied to mobo.

Thanks for the replies , mentioned to a mate of mine that i was upgrading and he came around and fitted a Xeon X5470 at 4ghz , he also got my 5850 up to 850/1150(although the fan at 100% sounds like a screaming banshee)
Been playing FC4 for a few hours now with no problems ,
my p35 ds4 is not ready for the skip yet , not bad for a few cans of stella.

Must admit i was a bit wary when he started chopping bits of my motherboard off to fit the cpu.

you should be able to get your card higher than that .

Did try but kept getting artifacts in warthunder when testing , put it back down to stock speeds at the moment as the fan was too loud.
It probably needs taking apart as if its in the same state as my cpu cooler its probably clogged in dust.
