I have built a computer, installed all the components and drivers successfully but when I try to watch videos/play games it often freezes, blacks out and comes back with the pop up message "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

Everything is up to date, there aren't any overheating problems or anything like that.

I think it is something to do with the "Timeout detection and recovery (TDR)"
I have tried everything and all they seem to be are temporary fixes. Anything will help.

Computer Specs
Motherboard - Gigabyte Z68A-D3-B3
Graphics - AMD Radeon HD 6790
RAM - 4GB Corsair Vengeance
Processor - Intel i5
OS - Windows 7 64 Bit
PSU - 650/750 (tried both)

Try wiping all drivers from your PC and reinstalling the latest ones from the AMD website, if problems persist try it on another PC or even try reinstalling windows or whatever you have as an OS

You might find something is over heating. Check temps on your CPU and gpu when it stops responding. Another thing is the power, are you using decent branded psu's and you could try increasing the voltage to the gpu slot very slightly in the bios.

As suggested update the bios and all drivers.
