Radeon VII a win or fail?

Thankfully I had the foresight to stick with Freesync because I always knew it would win the A-Sync war and that Nvidia would buckle eventually. I now have a monitor that I can enjoy regardless of what GPU brand I go for. Much better than paying the G-Sync tax only to end up stuck in the Nvidia only club.

I think many knew that would happen, it was a question of when. I have had my monitor for a long time now and enjoyed it playing many games on it so got my money’s worth. I have zero regrets and don’t see AMD offering anything competitive in the high end space for another 18-24 months. By then it will be time to upgrade my monitor a 120hz OLED TV that has adaptive sync anyways.

Saying that, I am actually considering taking break from high end PC gaming and go PS5. Will either keep what I have or sell my monitor and Titan XP in the summer after Shenmue 3 comes out and downgrade to 1440p and to a Vega GPU.

Well no AMD don't even have that no more. I was a Freesync user too. As I wanted to play 4K I got fed up and just sold my freesync monitor and got a G-Sync one, sorted.

G-sync is still the best way to play 4K even after Nvidia throwing the towel in and supporting Freesync anyway, as the Freesync one's only do 40-60hz at best.

But this isn't any different for gsync, I was curious about the comment so searched all the 4k monitors on ocuk and the cheapest 4k gsync that does more than 60hz (144) is £1,799.95, the cheapest freesync that does above 60hz (75) is £739. Yes some of the cheaper 4k freesync screens have a smaller range but they cater for the cheap end of the market. Either way a decent freesync screen is still cheaper than a decent gsync of comparable resolution / refresh. Gsync is clearly not the best, nor the cheapest way of experiencing sync tech.

Imo it's a cash grab to try and make a proprietary alternative to something that should be agnostic in order to corner a market.

It looks to me like at the top end where there is almost feature parity, that the gsync version is about 500 quid more, I say parity but it's not entirely as the freesync screen is actually more feature rich including things like HDR. Mind you at this point im looking at screens that cost a grand or more so perhaps out of reach for many regardless of sync tech.

Things have certainly changed since I purchased it seems. Though the panels you mentioned are not even proper HDR to be honest from what I saw. The only ones that have that cost close to £2000.

I would be interested to know how many freesync 4K monitors there are around £500 that does LFC and has a big range, as my G-Sync goes even below 30fps and still no tearing. The freesync monitors that are a bit cheaper last I looked were only 40-60 and had no LFC or overdrive options which my one does. But this may have changed since 2017 which when I got my monitor. For sure back then there were none though.

There is only 1 freesync monitor in the market with variable overdrive.
