Starting to get a few bits gathered together for a watercooling loop, going to mount a 120.3 rad in the roof of a Lian Li a70f case, (when i can source a replacement top panel), wondering about fan setups, im thinking of using three 120mm fans shrouded with old cutout fan frames, looking for advice on good 120mm fans to use, ive been using a TRUE black air cooler for a while now (tight fin density), the fans ive used with it have been sharkoon 2000's, 3 pin and sharkoon pwm 400-1200 rpms, both have worked very well on my lapoed TRUE black with an i7 at 4ghz.

Tried them on a heatsink mate, pretty good as well, though a radiator is a different matter.:)

Your Sharkoons would be more than good enough for a rad mate.

Though if you're wanting to get some new fans, the Scythe Gentle Typhoons are supposed to be awesome.

I personally have chosen some Yate Loons for my new loop, they are cheap and they do the job nicely.

Unfortunately davy, i sold all my sharkys, i had 2 x 2000 rpm models, 3x the very rare modular cable silent eagle se's, i ran those on my TRUE black and rear exhaust, that was in my old eclipse case, current lian li is still using the stock fans, 2 arctic cooling f12 pwm's on the TRUE.

EDIT: Incidentally, i won 5 gentle typhoons a few months ago in a competition, gave thwem to my wee nephew for one of his rigs.:o

Shrouds are a good idea.

Iirc your hearing isn't so good after time shooting bits of clay out of the air, in which case I'm certain you want 38mm fans of some sort (still with shrouds) rather than gentle typhoons.

Makes me laugh when people describe any 25mm fans as "one of the best". There's absolutely no contest between my s-flex and my san ace. The latter is blowing far more air through two radiators while at 7V than the s-flex can manage through one radiator at 12V.

Apparently davy, they reduce the dead spot were the fans motor assembly is, take the fan further back from the fins in an enclosed frame (shroud, can be an old fan frame), the fan sits further back from the rad/cooler fins, therefore airflow isnt being wasted. Its something i wanted to try with my TRUE, but having ocz reaper ram limits me to standard 25mm fans on my TRUE.

Yeah. The accepted answer is that they move the dead spot behind the hub on the fan to a place outside of the fins, allowing more even airflow through the radiator. They're definitely good, temperature improvement was shown to be about the same for one fan + shroud as for two fans in push/pull by martins liquid labs.

I'm not sure the stuff about the dead spot is based on anything very much, but more even airflow through the fins is definitely a good thing, and mounting the fan a distance from the radiator will help with that.

I might give this a go when I rebuild my loop, I don't have any old fans though, would those Feser shrouds be worth buying?

I might have a few old fans lying about davy, or my nephew might (15 year old pc repair guy, makes more money than me lol), if you need a few old frames i may have some, never seen the feser shrouds tbh.

I should have a few about davy, on my 2 current rigs ive been through a lot of fans, gotta admit, i like theese current arctic f12's i have on the TRUE, but the stock lian li fans are garbage. 2 x 140mm 1000 rpm led's on the front and 2 x 120mm rear 1500's, gonna replace them all with something more subtle, i use this rig as my blu ray player in the bedroom, led fans are a no no.

Good point, had to jack in the clay shooting, (£2500.00 per gun didnt help), for the brief time i tried the gentle typhoons, they were pretty good, just stuck with the sharky 2000's as i had all 5 in my eclipse hooked up to a fan controller, great cooling when benching my old q6600, dialled down for daily use.
