Late night phone-in host Mike Dickin, known to listeners as "The King", has died in a road accident near his home in Cornwall.

The veteran presenter was involved in a crash on the A30 on Monday, according to his current station, Talksport.

Dickin started his career at BBC Radio Oxford in the 1970s, where he was the first presenter on the air.

He also broadcast on Radio 4 and LBC, and won an award for his coverage of the Lockerbie disaster in 1988.

I used to listen to him regularly on Talk Radio. RIP :(

Damn, he was a fantastic presenter! I stopped listening to Talksport a couple of years ago because I was annoyed at the ever-increasing adverts, but I'd listened to the station since it started in the mid-90's, and Mr Dickin had been around either all or virtually all of that time. In my personal preferences, he was (strong) second to the joint-firsts of Collins and Boyd, but was brilliant nonetheless!

I'm not sure he even reached 65. :(

Well, if there is a heaven he'll be there putting the angelic bureaucrats to rights. :)

Tommy Boyds show was brilliant, shame they scrapped it so quickly.

Yeah. He was the most talented wind-up merchant I've ever heard, either on the waves or in life. Mr Dickin, conversely, was perhaps at the other end of the spectrum ergo the most easily wound-up...though I'm sure much of his bluster was for the sake of his devilish format. ;)

Very sad news, a great radio presenter who will be sadly missed.

My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

:(

I can still remember where i was when i first heard his show. I was doing a CATV installation at the Palace Hotel in Buxton, where i found him while surfing the car radio at lunch time. I've listened to Talk Sport's 10AM - 1PM slot ever since. Mike Dickin was my favourite. I loved his style. John Gaunt (the current occupier of that slot) tries. Sometimes he's bang on, other times he spouts utter rubbish while banging on about his Jagwaar. Mike was always (by my current recollection) bang on.

Caller: Hi Mike, How are you?
Mike Dickin: My health is not in question.

I'll miss you Mike. That's for sure.

He said that a lot :)

I didn't always agree with his views but I always enjoyed listening to his show and loved his style of presenting, and his cynicism and sarcasm.

Did you listen to the human zoo? I used to be in creases listening to that.

Yeah the human zoo on a Sunday night was fantastic, some of the best radio ive heard. :)

I urge all of you to listen to Talksport on Thursday night at 10pm where another great, James Whale, will be dedicating his show to Mike with a few hours of reflection and commeration to the King.
