Raedon HD 6450 help

I need a wee bit of help with my current set up.

Goal I wish to achieve: A dual screen set up.

What I currently have: A P4 computer running Win XP with a Raedon HD 6450 graphics card, two 17" monitors (one with just a VGA connection, other with a VGA and a DVI-D Dual Link connection), two VGA cables, a DVI-I Dual Link Male to VGA Female connector, and a DVI-I Dual Link to HDMI connector.

Current problem: I can only get one monitor at a time working just now.

What I'm not willing to do: Install Win 7 or Vista due to the low specs of my current machine and wanting to get the most out of it in that sense.

If anyone could tell me what to do or what to buy to enable the use of both monitors at the same time, that would be fantastic.

Cheers for reading, and thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for the reply, Andi.
I have already got the AMD catalyst display driver installed, but I didn't realise a new version had came out, I'm now downloading that and going to install it ASAP.
As for the make and model numbers of my card, I'm not 100% sure of what they are (I'm a bit of a "noob" when it comes to the graphics side of hardware) but here's what I do know about it which might be able to help you to help me.

Chipset: AMD Raedon HD 6450
Device ID: 6779
Vendor: 1002
Subsystem ID: 3202
Subsystem Vendor ID: 1682
Memory Size: 2048MB
Memory Type: DDR3
Core Clock: 625MHz
Memory Clock: 400MHz
Total memory bandwith: 6.4Gbyte/s

Ok, if you already had a relatively recent version of catalyst installed then that won't resolve this problem (though going for the new version is a good idea as you may see a performance boost in some tasks).

As for identifying the card's make and specific version, from that info I can't determine which particular make card you have - though the 2GB memory does narrow things down. Would you be able to look in the machine and look what the sticker says the manufacturer is, also what video output ports does the card have?

I think the sticker says the following...

HD - 645X - CN HD - 645X #NF2 VG.0
HD 6450 625M 2GB DDR3 HDMI DVI VGA
PCI-E
SN: M8Y014679

And as the sticker would indicate, it has a DVI-I Dual Link, HDMI and a VGA connection.

Ah, so it has a native VGA connection?

So I assume you have plugged your monitors in like:

VGA monitor - VGA graphics card output with VGA cable
VGA/DVI monitor -HDMI graphics card output with the HDMI to DVI-D cable

Is this the case?

If by native VGA connection you mean an on-board VGA connection, that's not correct.
But yeah, the VGA monitor set up is as you've described, but for the VGA/DVI monitor, I current lack a DVI-D cable or connector to change it, so I have been trying to use the VGA connection from the monitor with the VGA to DVI-I connector to plug it into the card, but it doesn't seem to want to work.

My native I mean a VGA connection is physically on the graphics card (as opposed to using the DVI-I output and a DVI-I to VGA cable/adapter).

As for the second monitor, your problem may be that the DVI output on the graphics card may be a digital-only (DVI-D). These DVI-D connections won't work with a DVI to VGA cable as there is no analogue signal being transmitted.

You can confirm this by looking up your particular make and model number graphics card online - for example this particular HD 6450 2GB card from MSI only has a DVI-D output - so this connection won't work with a VGA cable/adapter as mentioned above.

However, you can still get around this - you just need to connect a DVI-D (male) to DVI-D (male) cable between the graphics card and the VGA/DVI monitor or you can use a HDMI (male) to DVI-D (male) cable, and use the same monitor connection but connect to the HDMI output of the graphics card.
