however i dont really know much about the RAF which wouldnt be a great start at interview would it :(

i was in the air cadets.. that might help.. but all that was, was just puttin up tents... so i know nothing either :p

ok.. what happens in the selection process.

p.s. could i go in as an engineering officer.. surely you would need some engineering course under your belt? i know a friend who does mechanical engineering at northumbria and its solid... i.e. the maths and science that is involved

and i still want to get a degree just incase of something else.

You wont get in as an engineering officer unless you have a 2:1 hons in a mechanical engineering related degree, i.e. automotive, aeronautical, aerospace, etc. Even then it is hard work. Had a few mates on my course who went for it, one got on (1st class honours, v clever lad) and the other struggled.

My mate at coventry university just got into the RAF - he has no intentions of continuing after uni but he just sees it as a bit of fun. He joined in November 2005 and he now flys planes weekly and has his own flight suit etc etc...and gets paid for it!

He just spent the weekend doing survival training with the SAS.

Once you are in the RAF, you are under commission with a minimum service length of about 4 years. The forces shouldnt be considered a bit of fun. Effectively you are defending this country and risking your life.
Are you sure he is in the RAF and not something like the ATC or CCF? Im almost sure it is the latter.

If he's joined as a trade, the minimum service is generally (as in nearly always) nine years, if it's as an officer it's 4-12.

Matey's in for a bit of a shock, surely.

Either that or he's blagging you off pretty hardcore :p

If he joined in november he almost certainly wouldn't be 'flying' planes, they have to complete IOT (Initial Officer Training) of 30 weeks (with leave, so it takes longer) before they even get a whiff of an aeroplane.

And the minimum service term for Aircrew is 12 years (known as a short service commission, for ground based commissions it is 6). There is the option of a 18 year minimum (this is known as a permanent commission).

Yep, exactly. Like I said, he must be in the Air Training Corps. They get you flying very quickly and involve you in all the related RAF scene.

He will be in the University Air Squadron (UAS). He may of had a basic flying lesson or two but he sounds like hes just trying to impress people :).
