Hi,

I was just installing some new HDD's and i have a raid 0 installed on these 2 drives, but I have pulled out the SATA cables and have forgotten which SATA cables go from which SATA # to which drive! Does it even matter?

I didn't want to try it out in case something bad happened!

Cheers

I think if you put the drives back on in the wrong order it just wont boot...

I dont think it will erase anything if they are in the wrong order...Cause you havent physically broken the raid up. But some raid controllers can be picky and start going 'mehhh the raid has changed'...Then you'll have to add the disks again or something, that happens on some lsi raid chips at work.

Only thing you can do is try i guess =/ Unless someone knows of another way to do it.

Software or hardware created RAID array?

Software it shouldn't matter, hardware, if you try and boot with them wrong, the RAID BIOS will tell you that you have a broken array, it however shouldn't actually try and write anything to it, so you could in theory keep trying all the combinations until it works!

Depends on the controller. Most modern ones will give each disk a unique ID so it can identify them when moved and should automatically sort them out. As Delvis said, it won't nuke the array if you put them in the wrong way, so try it :).

when you get it working back up any data you need mate.

Raid 0 is nice n quick but twice as likely to fail.

Dont let that put you off though, i have been running raid 0 setups on personal machines for a long time now and love it.

Just make sure you keep copies of anything thats important lol

Most modern raid controllers I've come in contact with store a copy of the config on themselves and on the hard drives so when the controller boots up it can read either of them.

In the process of building my new computer, I took out the HDD loads of times and never made a note of which one was connected where. The Raid-0 never complained once.
