RAID Adapter Opinion

I recently picked up a Xeon based Dell T20 - with cashback it was too cheap to resist.

I'm not 100% sure how I'm going to configure it yet, but I've been thinking about the drives. The one think I do know is I'll be sticking to RAID1/RAID10(01), it's also fairly certain that it'll only have SATA drives installed.

Looking at what I've got kicking around the options appear to be:

  • Using the on board chipset.
  • PERC 5/i; I've got several spare with BBUs and cable sets. Obviously now quite old and relatively slow (not that should matter for the RAID levels I'm interested in).
  • ServeRaid M5014 (FRU 46C8929). I've got the adapter, but I'd need to buy cables, and if necessary the BBU.
  • Something else...
I know it's all a bit vague, but any thoughts? I suppose I'm really interested in whether the M5014 is worth pursuing.
