Might be asking a silly question here, but if I have a raid controller which uses Minisas connectors (SFF-8087), can I get a breakout cable to connect directly to SATA drives or do I need to have some kind of backplane between the cable and the drive?

Every cable I look at says "For connecting raid controller to backplane", nothing about connecting directly to drives

Thanks

Well i've got a megaraid 8308elp and have 2 breakout cables to 4 sata connectors on each, and it works.

Think the bit about backplane is so you can use SAS drives on it as the connector for sas and sata is different.

Yes you can.

You need a set of SFF-8087 -> 4x 7 pin SATA cables. They need to be forward breakout cables as reverse breakout go from a SFF-8087 backplane connector to motherboard 7 pin SATA connectors.

An example would be the LSI CBL-SFF8087OCF-10M (1 meter foward breakout cable). Check the LSI site as they have descriptions of what is needed to connect what to what :D.
