I'd like to set up raid on a hypervisor on my server, however ESXi 5 doesn't recognise my Highpoint 2720SGL or the integrated B110i controller.

What controller would suit this server for RAID:
HP ML100 G6 Xeon X3450 16Gb ECC
HP LO100i Advanced for KVM
HP NC382T PCIe 2x Gigabit Adapter
6x 2TB HDD for data
2x 250Gb HDD for OS's including Windows SBS 2011 Standard
Internal USB for hypervisor

Should I stick with HP such as P212, P410 etc? or would I get better value for money and compatibility with ESXi 5 from another brand? I don't want to spend a lot, I just want it to work and to provide reasonable performance.

Any help or general comments much appreciated

We have that server with a similar configuration where i work, not for ESX though, and we use a P410i in ours.
If you buy it though, make sure you buy the HDD cables to connect it as they arnt bundled.

As far as I can tell, the P410i addin card isn't available for my ML110 G6, I think its a ML350 thing. I cant find an HP part code.

ML110 G6 raid controller = B110i
E-cookie rescinded :-)

P410 + 512Mb BBWC £250 this ok?
P410 + 512Mb FBWC £420 seems a lot

Too late, I've eaten it.

Battery Backed will be completely fine.
Flash backed is really only neccessary if your environment is likely to lose power suddenly and not have power restored for more than 48 hours.

P410 is not a supported RAID controller for the ML110 G6
You need to look at the P212 controller
Smart Array P212 Controller
*
HP Smart Array P212/ZM 1-ports Int/1-ports Ext PCIe x8 SAS Controller - 462828-B21
HP Smart Array P212/256 1-ports Int/1-ports Ext PCIe x8 SAS Controller - 462834-B21

Optional Upgrades
HP 256MB P-series Cache Upgrade - 462968-B21
HP 650 mAh P-Series Battery -462969-B21
NOTE: Required to enable BBWC on the 256MB cache.

You would also then need the cable kit
HP Non-Hot Plug Internal SAS/SATA 4 Port Cable Kit -487734-B21
NOTE: This cable will only be required when Smart Array Controller is ordered with a BTO configuration.

Thanks, I had a look at those parts (the upgrades come in 2 very different prices whether they are retail or bulk order ...maybe min order? ...confused)

Also, I have 8 internal SATA HDD's and cards like the P212 only have 1 internal 4-port connection, I'd rather not take an external cable back in the case again, I believe 1 port can take more than 4 SATA drives with the right cables, but I expect this would affect performance?

It appears the P212 is the only 'HP supported' controller. I'm not too worried about HP support if I can save money and get better performance from a different product.

However, the card of choice does need to be ESXi 5 compatible.

a used P400 512 BBWC is about £100 and is on the official ESXi list. I'm sure there are other cards not on the list that work?

Have bought for £180:
1x IBM M1015
2x SAS to 4x SATA cables

Will test it tomorrow hopefully, I can always send it back (which admittedly I've not done in the past)

Sorry for the delay in responding. If you can get those working then fair play. Just remember you won't be "supported" by HP, however for a box at that price and what you get for it, is it really worth the price premium? Plus, they are pretty much all the same parts with a different badge on them!

Hope it all works okay for you.
