RAID question

Using a basic 2 disk RAID1 setup
with 2 different sized disks, can the larger disk be partitioned such that the extra capacity be used as a stand alone partition alongside the RAID setup ?

Might have been worth mentioning the OS will be FREENAS and it is software RAID.
I already have a 1.5TB drive full of data.
I want to purchase a 2TB drive.
I am fairly sure (some clarification would be good here) that I will have to wipe both drives to create the RAID array will I not ?

do you know if I can utilise the spare 500GB with freenas or is that beyond the capabilities of the OS ?
