Hi all,

Just a quick question, I am planning on buying 2 x 2TB drives for a Dell 755 small form factor ESXi, I belive these boxes have RAID0,1 capability

Is it possible to use them in RAID mode with ESXi if I am booting ESX off a USB stick? so the 2 x 2TB drives will be synced?

Apologies if not, my RAID knowledge is lacking especially when it comes to VMWare.

you need to check your raid controller against the vmware hardware list or depending what os your using you can create a virtual disk on each hard rive and use windows build in raid to get round it.

Just to clarify, ESXi is installed on a USB drive/card and you want the 2 * 2TB drives to be in a raid for the datastore.

If it is then yes ESXi will see once you have created your raid as one datastore providing your hard is supported as above.

I will have to check the built in RAID controller to see if its supported

Yes ESXi hypervisor is booted from a USB, my drives are then purely used for VM and datastorage

If it is, it just a case of enabling it in the BIOS then what configuration needs to be done within ESX? is it somewhere around the data store configuration settings?

WIll have to have a read up at some point.

If not I will just have to add 2 separate drives and use them as two individual datastores, and shift data between the two with backups.

The built in intel RAID controller is not recognized by ESXi, nor does it have any drivers for it.

I know to my cost. I went and purchased a Mylex RAID card to get around that particular problem.
