Ive a raid array on my computer that has stopped working its not fully backed up. If its the motherboard that has stopped working would I need to buy exactly the same motherboard to read the data in the raid array?

Don't have that much experience with AMD ones, but if it's Intel then you can buy pretty much any same generation or newer board, set RAID in the BIOS then connect the drives and it should pick up the array. If it's got Windows on it then it "might" not log in properly, but usually does.

exact - no.

It depends if the raid is part of the chipset or provided by a 3rd party (e.g Silicon Image). If the former - any board should work, if the latter, you'll most likely need another controller from the same company.

In theory - in practise sometimes even just revisions/different firmware of the same controller break compatibility :(

Yeah depends a bit on the configuration of the array - but I've tried to recover a couple of setups for people who've RMA'd for the exact same motherboard but the newer ones have a slightly updated BIOS, etc. and it just plain won't work - sourcing the same board from like ebay that is from about the same time as their original board however could see the array.

Also had a similar experience albeit a long time ago with my DFI 975X when it died - fortunately had the array backed up though.
