I've bought a new 2U SuperMicro server and it come with rails.

There is a big problem. The rails will not mount on the server cabinet.

There is a metal behind the shelving holes. I found a picture look like this:

As you can see it is impossible to mount the rail.

This is how it should be done:

Any suggestion what can I do?

Can you not remove the rails that point towards each other? (I.e. the rails that are restricting you.) Usually they will unscrew and come off.

I would have thought the shelf rails come out allowing you to have either a shelf cab or standard cab.

Just had a look this morning, this is what it look like:

Take a whole rail off? Which standard cab do I need to replace to.. where can I purchase it?

any suggestion?

I think I know what the problem is. I have the same issue. We are due to get new bunch of server and SAN into our server room, but I've checked we mostly have old 80x80cm racks. However modern servers are being produced with rails for 80x100cm (widthxdepth) cabinets and made in a way that you can't fit them any longer. For example a few legacy MAC and IBM servers that we still have would never fit into 80x80 cabinets, no matter how we tried, even though they are about 10 years old.

It depends on the rail itself, you might be able to fit it, however you need to take off the back of the cabinet off as server will stick out, I'll go and take a picture on my phone from one of the cabinets where I have servers with 100cm rails, took a bit of fidling to fit. Sorry I can't show much though, so it will be close up.

Alternatively as you asked and if you ahve about £500 spare, you can get cabinet from here: http://www.rackcabinets.co.uk just look for 80x100 cabinet (hight depends on what you need, by the look from your pictures you have standard 42U size similar my cabinets.

Excuse my shaky hands, but here it is:

I couldn't get good enough angle, but you see that rail sticks out to where back of the cabinet should be sat. If you environment allows you then open it and you might be able to fit it (again depends on the rail)

Yea I have decided to buy a new cabinet.

Which manufacturer do you recommend?

Budget £400-500.

I personally like PRISM server cabinets, although the assembly instructions could be better in all honesty assuming you order it flat pack rather than fully assembled. You get a choice of widths - the wider one is slightly easier to cable in.

This is quite a common issue with racks as there are server racks and data racks and they do differ. We use APC racks but they are nearer £1k each but are worth it in a data centre environment as you can fit anything into them.

Try http://www.comms-direct.com as they seem reasonable.

I think you need width for 800mm, depth in 1000mm is good.

Update cancel that, just looked up Super micro is 430-438mm width depending on the model, so 600 will be ok, but the question is what else goes into the cabinet (surely whole cabinet just for 1 server is overkill) and is it wide enough for other equipment?

Rack width is application dependent not server dependent. All servers fit between 19" posts these days, meaning a 600 cab is all you need. That said, 750 is more appropriate if comms equipment is also going in or if you want to fit cable management in certain ways.

Either way, APC Netshelter SX cabinets are excellent.

Also make sure your depth is right. APC Netshelter racks are 1070mm deep, that 70mm is important if you want to use cable management arms, we had an install of 1000 deep racks from an alternate manufacturer and using dell servers you couldnt attach the management arms at the back as the doors wouldnt close, we ended up fitting an 100mm optional bay to each rack.
