Morning guys

First post, so be gentle!

After years of buying pre-built systems I'm finally going to have a shot a building a rig myself.

The only real problem is what RAM I should use - I've read through the forums/etc but its still as clear as mud to me, so I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction?

I'm going to put a E6850 (1333FSB) onto a Gigabyte P35-DS4 mobo and cant decide between GeIL PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low or Crucial Ballistix PC6400C4 (4GB in each case).

I have also been looking at the PC8500 and wonder if there would be any benefit in using 4GB OcUK 8500C5 1066MHz instead of either of the PC6400 mentioned above.

Apologies in advance if its a no-brainer

Cheers guys

Sean ;)

ps ...... it's for a DX10 gaming rig and I'm not interested in OC's at this stage (although I may tinker in the future).

anyone?
.
You guys all seem to know this sort of thing inside out - a pointer in the right direction would really be appreciated
.
I'm from the Channel Islands so want to order all my kit in one go to avoid duplicate £22 delivery charges
.
Ta in advance

I wouldn't worry to much about PC2-8500 RAM unless you have some super cooled system and intend on some extreme overclocking. Even the new 333Mhz (1333MHz effective) CPUs only require a minimum of PC2-5400 (DDR2-677). You need to be running your system bus at 533Mhz (2132MHz effective) to be using the full potential of PC2-8500. You're safest bet however, is to go with some PC2-6400 THis will give you some headroom for some achievable and more realistic overclocking.

Read the is guide I've created, which explain what DDR2 to buy..

As for the timings, this depends if you are running intel or AMD CPUs. Basically, AMD benefit from having more tighter timings from the RAM rather than the speed from which they run. Intel on the other hand is completely opposite.

Hope that helps

Huddy :)

Cheers Huddy, what you say all sounds like a foreign language to me ........ I'll have a read through your tutorial and hopefully it will clear things up a bit
.
I appreciate your help mate - at least I know what RAM to get now :)

No worries, basically any PC2-6400 RAM is going to serve you well. If it was my choice.' i'd go with the Geil.
