I am currently in the process of building a new rig – my first in several years – and I thought it best to ask for some opinions on RAM options:

As RAM is relatively cheap, it seems superficially sensible to buy as much as you can of the fastest you can afford, but I suspect it is not quite so simple. It occurs to me that overclocking might be compromised by populating all available dimms and that tighter timings/faster speeds might be preferable to larger amounts of system RAM (beyond a certain point).

I plan to use the Asus Rampage IV board, which supports up to 8 dimms, permitting up to 64Gb (8x8Gb) of RAM.
Although it would be feasible to purchase enough high speed RAM (2400Mhz) to populate all 8 slots and max out the board, I wonder whether this would be wise. 64Gb seems unnecessary (even 32Gb might be excessive).

Firstly, would 8 high density dimms indeed compromise overclocking potential and/or RAM speeds enough to warrant either using only 4 dimms or 8 of a lower density/higher speed?
If so, which would be preferable – 4 x 8Gb or 8x4Gb?

Secondly , would you recommend Corsair’s Dominator series or Geil’s Evo Veloce?

Thanks for any replies.

I would recommend the Samsung Greens, you are correct in that filling all slots can have an effect 16 GB would be more than enough unless you are planning to use VM's or other memory intensive stuff - gaming is more than met at 16 gb

The samsung@ 4 X 4 gb would run at may by 2000 or 1866

If you decide that your choices are the way to go then both are good sticks, I would only buy 4 tbo and if you needed more later then so be it :)
