Hey all,

Quick question! Seems I am an idiot, the motherboard I have purchased only supports 1333/1066/800 MHZ ram. The sticks I purchased are 1600 MHz.

Will it still work just at a lower MHz? Or am I better off getting a refund and ordering the exact speeds

Thanks

The motherboard states "Supports" but that isn't to say it won't run higher frequency RAM. However, 1600 MHz RAM will run at 1600 MHz providing you change the DRAM reference in the BIOS.

After a quick bit of research it should be OK as the sticks are two 3 x 2 gb sticks. Can this be confirmed with anyone? If not I shall have to get up early on the phone to ocuk!

The ram needs to go back. That is tri-channel. The motherboard is dual channel. You want 4gb or 8gb done in multiples of 2. That is to say 2x4gb, 2x2gb, 4x2gb etc.

Disappointing to see that OCUK do not state clearly if it is dual or tri channel motherboard. Have noticed recently some of their descriptions have been getting very vague. Never used to be.

While I would not condone anyone to build a pc if they are not going to put the time in to at least research if they need dual or tri channel ram for the mobo, it should really be stated as it is an easy mistake to make for new builders. Particularly on the SB where you'd presume it would follow on from nehelm and be tri-chan.

I am also at a loss as to why that mobo would not state it supports the higher ram frequencies as there is no reason for any SB mobo not to I would have thought. Might just be a typo.

I was aware it's dual channel it's just the wrong sticks have been sent out.

The motherboard only supports those frequencies according to the official site I do agree it seems odd though

@ OP

Just confirming, OC sent you 2 x 2gb sticks of XMS RAM that was in a 3 x 2gb XMS RAM pack?
It's uncoventional but the memory should be fine. Triple channel can be viewed as double channel + another matched stick.

re: Descriptions : they look like a direct dump from the suppliers web-site information. I wouldn't blame OC for the double channel / triple channel confusion (nor the various i5, i7 sockets).. I blame Intel!

This is correct, they said it should function as.normal double chan

All ram is the same trhe channel means nothing
single channel is 1 stick or ram
dual channel is 2 stick's or ram
triple channel is 3 stick or ram

but the ram in each pack will e the same ram.
