Asus P6T Deluxe, i7920 --- I'm about to swap out my ram - I want to run 12gb (for video+3d stuff) but filling all slots apparently makes overclocking more work so I'm looking at this kit -

Corsair Vengeance 12GB (3x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit (CMZ12GX3M3A1600C9) [CMZ12GX3M3A1600C9]

Any advice beforehand about pro's and cons or other ram options would be welcomed!
My cooler is an H-50 in an Antec 900-2 case, so I don't expect that taller ram will be a problem

Thanks

I would normally recommend the XMS3 3x4gb 12800 (for money saving) - but i can't source them at 1600MHz anywhere.

The above memory will be absolutely fine/great - and you'll have no fitting issues as you have the H50.

that's an interesting question - I do do a lot of intense video and some 3d work so more ram would be of use

When I got the asus P6T I filled all slots with 6 gig sticks - I had asked for a 12 gig set but got two matching OCZ3RPR1866C9LV6GK - 6gig sets of 3x2GB DDR3.

Eventually (after a year) one of the sticks failed - it refused to show up no matter what i did (and i tried everything for 2 weeks) so it's being RMA'd - I'm waiting to hear whether the whole lot will have to go or just one three stick set.

if I retain one set, is there a possibility I could run it along side the Corsair 12 g set? I hadn't thought of doing that for two reasons - one is the ram doesn't match (Corsair is 1600 - OCZ Reaper is 1800) - and also, filling all slots isn't the best idea for an overclock - (which is why I fitted the H-50 cooler)

Any observations welcome!

It 'may' be possible to run the OCZ with the Corsair Vengeance -but you will have marry up their respective settings (voltage being one of the main issues.)

The maain problem is the voltage - 1.65v for the OCZ and 1.5v for the Corsair. However, it's quite possible that the OCZ would run at 1.5V as it will have to be under clocked to 1600MHz and run at slightly looser timings to match the Corsair. This may make it possible to run at 1.5V - matching the Corsair recommended spec.

It would certainly be worth a try.

And yes, using all the DIMM slots will limit a clock - but if memory is more important than raw processing power then you could settle for a reduced clock with more memory?

EDIT: they may very well change all 3 sticks as the stick is part of a tri-set.
