RAM compatibility?

I've got an Asus A7N8X Deluxe rev 2 board and am having a problem getting Windows XP to boot with the addition of an extra 1GB stick of ram.

The system has been running on a matched pair of Corsair CMX512-3200C2pro in dual channel mode for years and all is well. The BIOS settings are set to auto config and aggressive timings (spec. of ram is 6-3-3-2). I have an Athlon XP 3200+ so am running at 200Mhz.

Recently I got hold of a 1GB stick of Corsair CMX1024-3200PRO (8-4-4-3). The first time I put this stick in, Windows booted and reported 2.00GB of RAM, then I shut down and shuffled the sticks around to try and disable dual channel between the 1Gb and a 512 stick. Now the system only gets as far as the XP loading screen with the scrolling bars. The scrolling is fine until a point where it stutters and stops altogether. Looking at BIOS on auto-aggressive timings, the greyed out timings are at 8-3-3-3 with the full 2GB installed.

Booting in Safe Mode works with the 2Gb, I can also boot into Ubuntu from a live CD. Windows will only boot with the 1GB stick on its own or my previous 1GB Matched pair. I have tested the ram with memtest and tried all sticks or ram in all slots and combinations to get the same freeze at loading screen.

I asked on the Corsair forums to be told it may be a stability problem from mixing ram, so I thought I'd post here for a second opinion or for some ideas. Could this be a Windows issue and solved by a reinstall or a setting in XP?

Anyone able to help? Thanks in advance!
