Hi everyone, I'm currently researching for an AMD system I'm gonna be building very soon. And I think I need some advice on what memory to use

The other parts I plan to use are:

Amd Phenom II x6 1090t Black Edition
Asus Crosshair IV Formula
2 x ATI Radeon HD 5970
1200w everest PSU
Antec 1200
Dual Loop Water Cooling for cpu and both gpu's.

So yea basically I don't have a budget, I've been dreaming about building this spec of computer for years and have put a lot of research into it, I think it's gonna end up around £3300 by the time I'm finished (including 3d monitor, surround sound ect

Right so I think I've settled on Corsair Dominator if it's GT version will depend on advice I get.

I plan to use the system for running multiple VM's (so two people can use the comp at once, before anyone suggests that's not what VM's do, I'm setting up 2 x-servers on linux to use separate peripherals, then running a VM each to use windows , a media server to my other crappy comp and consoles. Audio and Video processing (recording instruments, and up scaling). Debugging and compiling. Oh yea and I'm gonna be using the water cooling fully and overclocking everything to it's stable limits.

So basically the amount of memory is gonna be as important as it's speed.

So to the first question, for those uses, is sacrificing a low cas and 2000mhz worth it for 16gb of cas 9 1600 mhz dominator worth while. Is 16gb overkill?

I started off looking at the QVL and chasing up the serial numbers for those models which seemed to support a stick in every slot. But it seemed the serial number for the appropriate ones were fictional or long since out of commission. After much reading I found a few posts that said screw the QVL, pick the fastest your MB will support with a low CAS.

Another thing which left bald patches in my hair was the memory controller of the AMD being native to 1333mhz. People have said they have run 1600 no problem, but this was when I was researching the Gigabyte 890fx UD5. It seems the Asus crowds aren't aware of this and put the fastest they can afford in and it apparently works.

So I found some dominator Gt 1600 c7 which supports Black Edition Memory Profiles. But people have said its next to impossible to get hold of the profiles and it's just not worth it for the extra money and lack of support when you can just overclock it yourself, plus it was 1600 and I'd like to go for 2000mhz

I think what I settled on was some Dominator GT 2000 C6, its a bit on the steep side at £200 for 4gb though. So will this work with the crosshair? I'm open to suggestions but if I have to chase up non existent serial number on the QVL I think I might have to shoot myself. So is ignoring the QVL sound advice cos if it isn't I think I'm doomed to have crap ram. Would the 2000mhz gt work? Or should I use 16gb taking into account I plan to use maybe 3-4VMS at once. Personally I think I'll be fine with 8GB I mean I'm not gonna be processing GB image files...

Please someone help!

2000mhz would work, but timings are as important as speed. I have the 1600mhz c7 BEMP but got fed up of trying to get the profiles, so had to manually set up the timings. Running 1433mhz at the moment as my RAM doesn't like anything above 1650mhz (FSB is overclocked).
The 2000mhz will work, but run it underclocked if you're afraid of the memory controller failing suddenly. You can then use this RAM again on a new build when CPUs with better memory controllers are out. Bulldozer can support up to 1866mhz apparantly.
Seeing as two people will use it, and with video and audio processing, 16gb might be worth it (8gb to each person). Seeing this, perhaps maybe setting the RAM to 1333mhz will be a better idea, as to not stress the memory controller too much.
