Hey ppl,

what type of RAM do they use in the Mac Pro? I'm sure it was triple channel DDR3 10660 but today I confused myself so would like to confirm.

Is it triple of dual channel?

Also, do you know if the motherboard they use (I believe it is a gigabyte board) supports PC 12800 also?

Just bought one today went for the 8 core with the 6GB RAM cos they charge a disgusting amount for RAM so will buy some RAM and most likely an SSD too.

Earlier Mac Pro used FB-DIMMs. Later models use DDR3 ECC. It's not the same as the ordinary RAM used in 99% of PCs.

Yeah that looks fine, make sure you don't exceed the max amount for each slot.

Yeah I'll get 4 lots of 2x4GB sticks = 32GB if my maths is any good :D

I take it any Sata drives are good or are they specific too? I would be getting a couple of Crucial M4 SSDs

As you can tell, I don't really know MACs at all but it's for work and we need the apple only software unfortunately.

Indeed. The only time I bought Apple RAM was for my 2006 MBP in the US as DDR2 SO-DIMMS were a rare beast at the time and it was cheaper than to order it elsewhere.

First thing I did with the Mac mini and my new MBP was to buy guaranteed RAM from a third party. £160 for the 8GB upgrade from Apple (which includes them getting the 4GB back), vs £35 for 8GB of guaranteed tested compatible RAM from elsewhere, plus the spare 4GB for use elsewhere. It's a no brainer!

Sorry to revive this thread but I was just thinking about CUDA and its benfits.

Apple currently stick AMD 5770s in the Mac Pro. Why don't they put in an Nvidia card?

Can you swap to an Nvidia to enjoy the benefits of CUDA within the Mac Pro. I guess it doesn't need to be anything too powerful

Something like that. Can you swap out GPUs in the same way you can in a PC ?

Thanks again

you can't just use any GPU. they do support a fair few these days across all the different mac's and you can even get others working but its all a bit dodgy

and I'm not sure about CUDA either
