Ram freezing problems

Hi guys,

I recently bought a new motherboard and I found my RAM was running at 1333Mhz and I wanted to boost it up to atleast 1600Mhz.

But when I tried just changing the speed my computer freezes and I have to restart.

I am trying to run the ram at 1600Mhz but every time I set it in the BIOS it only loads 4GB of it. When the BIOS loads is shows that only 4GB is being used, and Windows replicates this in the system details.

It does not matter what voltage I use it never uses both sticks!

Do you guys think that its my mobo or my ram thats the problem?

Any help is welcome
(specs in my sig)

Any chance you could post the exact make of the RAM? May be some kind of voltage or incompatibility error.

You could try running memtest for a while on stocks, then on each stick on settings at 1600Mhz

First off are you using a 32bit or 64bit os?
If you are using 64bit look in the BIOS for an option called something like "remapping" and set to the opposite state it's currently at.
For the ram speed, try setting the voltage manually to the specified amount for your ram, save the settings, then set the mem frequency to 1600.

Hi, I notice your running a Phenom x4 CPU. I'm Pretty sure that these chips do not support ram running at higher than 1333mhz (Don't quote me on that). I found this out when i tried to run my memory at 1600mhz on my second computer which also has a Phenom x4 and i was also experiencing freezing.

My RAM is 2x 4GB Corsair XMS3, when I run memtest on 1333mhz it runs fine with no errors, but when I put it up to 1600mhz it always shows errors (no matter what the voltage!

Yes its windows 7 home premium 64bit :) What is remapping for?

Even if I take the voltage up to 1.65(ish) it doesn't make any difference :/

Hmm that may be very annoying! Can anyone support this? I don't really want to buy a new cpu ;)

Thanks for your quick replies guys!

The remapping in BIOS tells the OS how to use your RAM, find the setting and change to the opposite state to which it's currently in.

Adjusting the voltage will not make more RAM available! In my experience if you haven't got enough voltage going to your ram it will just fail, not give you less ram.
Does the ram specs actually say this memory will do 1600 or are you just trying your luck?

Can you find any further information on that? I would have thought that regardless of the bus speed, running asynchronous memory should be fine.

Have you reinstalled windows?

The RAM is rated at 1600mhz for 1.65v, which just makes me wonder whether its something else like the cpu or the mobo and not the RAM :/

What would you guys suggest to get it stable at 1600mhz?

I will try and change the remappin when I get home, but would you suggest any changes to my overclock? i.e. upping the HT link speed? etc.

I wouldn't worry about the mapping at the moment tbh.

Did you reinstall windows after installing the motherboard?

Try installing one stick of RAM at time and restest.. Try also different banks, just to see if this makes any difference. If one stick works and another doesn't register in the same bank then you could have a faulty stick of RAM. If both sticks fail in the same bank but work in another, then it could be a faulty motherboard or memory controller, which of course is located on the CPU.

Have you set the setting manually or enabled XMP in the BIOS?

Change the command rate, does that make any difference.

No I didn't reinstall windows after putting the motherboard in, do you need to?
I will have a try when I get home :) I was changing the settings manually

Thanks for all your help! I will test everything and then get back to you
