Would installing cheap RAM heatsinks actually make the ram worse???
Sorry about my other thread

hmmmmm worse !!! I doubt that very much. But maybe not any better though. Why would you want to spend money for no benefit?? what voltage you putting through your DIMMS and what actual DIMMS are they???

Well good RAM like the Kingston HyperX already have heat spreaders/sinks on them. I doubt they would manufacture them with the sinks if they affected performance negatively.

Not sure about cheap ones.

They don't make it any better/cooler.

I think it has just caught on since only high end ram used to have heat spreaders on them. This then filtered down to the low end, now I think all manufacturers do it as they do not want their ram to look cheap compared to the opposition.

That is the logical answer. They do look better aesthetically with the heat spreaders.

Heatspreaders on ram are 100% aesthetics basically. Unless you're water cooling then it would make a difference but the air ones are just there for show really.

If anything, ram kits with tall fin/pipe type heatsink arrangements can be a bit of a hindrance. They can limit the use of certain coolers. Found this with ocz reapers.

Back in the day I installed heatsinks onto ram purely to make them easier to handle. Of course that all depends on how often you're removing and installing them, but when benching it was pretty handy to be able to grab them and put them down anywhere.
