Lo All.

I'll be honest, i'm not really an overclocker as yet but it's something i'm certainly interested in working on in the coming months. What leads me here then is that i'm currently in the process of upgrading my old beast and i want to (on a budget :/) produce a system that will last me a while, and perhaps i can even begin to play with overclocking.

Going from other people's reccomendations and from reading reviews, i have so far done the following upgrades:

Abit KV7 -> Asus P5n32-E SLi Plus
AthlonXP 2500+ -> Intel E6400
Geforce MX440 64mb ( :eek: ) -> Gainward 7900GS Bliss (I will add a second one of these next payday)
Jet 7 -> Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro

Im currently using 1 x 512mb of Kingmax DDR. Given that the above board (obviously :P) requires DDR2, which should i opt for? I'll be honest, whilst i can fumble blindly around the rest of the system, mixing and matching to some semi-competent degree, i get completely lost at RAM.

I dont really understand the difference between PC-4600, 5300, 6400 and what have you.

Given that im open for overclocking after completion, and that im looking at a budget of about £100inc Vat, what would you reccomend? I'm not trying to play PREY at 100fps, but i'd still like to be able to enter Shattrath without falling to my death for the grind.

that was long winded. So i highlighted the important bits :P Thanks in advance!

Tbh you'd have been better off with a Gigabyte DS3 , an ASUS P5B or an ASUS P5N-E motherboard. The latter is the only one with two IDE connectors btw and the DS3 doesn't have SLi. Upto 70 quid cheaper than the Asus P5n32-E SLi Plus and just as good.

And you'd be mad to Sli 7900GS's when you can get a single 320mb 8800GTS for £200.

But as for memory, either the PC6400 Geil, PC6400 OCZ or the PC5300 Crucial Ballistix would do fine.

Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, I have already bought and recieved the above items so i can't really go about swapping them now. As for the 7900GS, I couldnt really stretch myself to 200, and i thought adding a second card at a later date was a viable alternative to shelling out lots in one go. Like i said, im not too worried about squeezing out every possible bit of power :)

So, what is the difference between PC5300 and PC6400? Also, would 1gb be enough ram to run WoW and CS:S/ Half Life 2 happily or should i really fork out for 2gb? Again i can always add some at a later date.

Thanks again

Nope, go for 2gb. It'll make a big difference to your games.

PC5300 is slightly slower than PC6400, but the PC5300 Crucial Ballistix clocks further than the Geil and OCZ PC6400.

But, tbh, with an e6400 the Geil and OCZ should be fine. And since the OCZ is only £112 til this Thursday, it's probably the better option.

Brilliant :)

I must say, that without trying to sound like a brown-nose, this is probably the most helpful board i've come across. you'd be amazed at some of the crappy service you get at other large Uk retailers :/

Thanks again!
