Just built my first comp with these specs:
  • Asus ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (Rev. 2)
  • Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz (Bloomfield) (Socket LGA1366) - Retail
  • Iiyama ProLite B2409HDS 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black
  • Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
  • Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel (CMX6GX3M3A1600C9)
  • OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply
  • Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD1002FAEX)
  • Lancool Dragon-Lord PC-K58 Mid Tower Case - Black
  • Titan TTC-NK85TZ/V2 Fenrir CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775/LGA1156/LGA1366)
  • Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard (967929-0120)
  • Samsung SH-S223L/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) - OEM
I turned it on for the first time after double checking everything was plugged in but the ram LED turns on and a high pitched buzzing sound comes out.

There's some sort MEMOK! button which I attempted to press but that had no result.

I dont know too much about computers so if you could explain in bit more detail than you're used to as to what the problem might be that would be great

EDIT: the screen also stays black throughout with no signal output

Check the memory are in the correct slots, did this on my build.

Also is the 8 pin for cpu power connected - often gets missed.

There'll be an 8 way surface mount minifit junior connector somewhere near the CPU socket which will need connecting to the PSU. The PSU connector will probably be in the form of 2x 4 way connectors that may have CPU1 or similar printed onto it. This provides the hungry CPU with extra 12v current that the mainboard cannot get from the normal connector.

There should be a 'plastic' looking power connector on the motherboard near the CPU slot (usually above) - that's the one that is often missed. (it goes directly to the Power, like the very long main motherboard connector but smaller)

Edit: lol, pipped by a much better post :P

I've found an 8 pin slot labelled EATX12V which i'm guessing is the cpu power but I cant find a cable long enough top of the case to bottom and one end of the cable doesnt fit into the power supply just goes halfway and refuses to budge.

That's the correct connector. Just checked the spec for your PSU and it should have the CPU 8 pin connector hard wired to the supply. Ie. Not a modular attached cable. The other attached cables are the 24way and a 4 way CPU connector (not needed)

On my OCZ 600w SXS Psu the cable us just long enough to reach if I drape it across the graphics card and that's in a mid tower P183 case.

You can buy extensions for the 8 way if it doesn't reach. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-022-AK&groupid=701&catid=48&subcat=153

you may be able to get it from a local shop too, but ensure it's not a 4 way to 8 way converter. It needs to be 8 to 8 as the Akasa.
