Hello people (yea first post)

I'm here to request some advice form the experts on this board. Baisicly this is my spec (well the important bits)

ECS (Elite Group) RS480-M Socket 939- Motherboard
512mb RAM
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8ghz - CPU
Onboard GFX

My bro built this computer about 3 years ago and eventually i inherited it after he left for America but its time for a change. Ideally i would like to build a new rig however due to a lack of funds i have to wait for at least a year before i am able to.

In the meantime i would like to upgrade my current rig, as it is not performing as well as i would like, and i am not sure what to upgrade first between the CPU and the RAM.

I was thinking about upgrading the CPU first as i see the prices of most of the socket 939 CPU's are increasing because of lack of supply so i figure getting it now would save me from paying more later. However i also think that upgrading the Ram to 2gb (max for my board) would give the greatest performance boost and will do me well until i get enough money to buy the cpu in about 2 months. But i am still undecided.

I have about £45 max to spend right now on either RAM or a new/ used dual core, SKT 939 cpu.

Thanks in advance.

I'd just get an other 512mb as u will not use more than a gig unless u are playing modern games on med to high settings or doing very serious video or photo manipulation .It much better spend no more than maybe £10 then save up for a basic core2duo bundle of cpu,2gig ddr2 and matx motherboard for about £120 or less and if u game a graphics card.

Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail£38.99 1 £38.99
Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2 NVIDIA GeForce 7100 / nForce 630i Chipset (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard£31.99 1 £31.99
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC)£22.99 1 £22.99

Problem is you will pay through the nose for memory for that board, I would do as the above suggests save a few more £ and replace the lot. The difference will be like night and day.
If you can't wait though, another stick of 512mb would make a significant difference.

That E2180 is an amazing little chip for the price.

I'm looking to upgrade to Intel Q6600 in the next week or two. I'd be "ditching" a s939 AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+, and 3GB of DDR PC3200 RAM (the stuff you'd need). The mobo I have isn't worth bothering with (it's OK, but is a Compaq board = nobody would want to buy it really).

With that in mind, if you fancy dropping me an email I'd be happy to sort you out cheap as this would suit both of us.

I would grab the 4200 x2 from the guy above and buy extra 512mb stick of memory.

I guess you're not playing games since you have onboard GPU so that will do for you for quite bit of time :).

However I would try to grab some X1650 IceQ 2nd hand for around 30quid.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've just gone and bought another 512mb stick so it should be arriving soon. And rainmaker, ill gladly take you up on that offer depending on how cheap it is.

I CANNOT QUITE BELIEVE. For months ive been tring to sell my AMD AThlon 64 4000+ Cpu and then you come along just as i throw it away. Un-be-freakin-leivable.

Its the gods, i guess they just weren't on your side. I guess this is just one of those situations where we realise the impotence "Patience is a virtue" . :p

I would gladly pay for the postage and a pint of lager for ya if you want to throw some more of them ;-).

Yep,better to get a fiver for it on the bay than throw it in the bin!
